Diesel Tremor as Daily Driver

I daily my 22' 6..7 with no problems.

Short trip driving is definitely not favored by a modern diesel, but there are preventative measures you can take.

1. Use a good fuel additive (archoil, hotshots, etc)
2. Keep an eye on your regens and filter percentage. (Can be added via forscan) If you see it starting a Regen, take a detour so it can finish)
3. Keep your def fluid full. If it sits to long, it will start to evaporate and you get crystals forming in the tank / lines. Dilution is the solution!
4. Most importantly, drive it like you stole it. These engines don't like to be babied 🙂

Let warm it up a bit before you tip into it - then like the man said drive it like you stole it.

48K on the clock, some towing, around town, long trips to TX,CA, and MI - running 76-85mph, it's wonderful, stable, and quick for big truck

Winter time outside temps around 20°F - garage temp 35-40° start up, out of garage let it coolant come up. In cold weather it's really good idea to get up to highway speeds getting emissions stuff up to temperature

just rolled over 100k on my 23 6.7 HO. Been on a weight loss program since 70k miles. Daily driving since march 2024 when i bought it.
My commute to work is about 12 miles one way. I wait for trans and coolant temps to be over 120* before I get on it too hard

How do you define def as good? It’s all just deionized water and urea fertilizer. It only has to squirt in the exhaust system. What’s the difference between $6.99 def at the farm store or $19.99 at the parts store besides paying for a name??

Thanks for this tidbit. I hear people talking about monitoring regen I did not know you can a visual.

As long as it has the API logo, nothing but the weight of your wallet.
Now, if they made it so my exhaust smelled like cotton candy or grape Bubba-Licious, I would pay a little more 🤣

It's not going to be.

Only difference between the HO and welfare version is stainless headers and intake.

Same applies to both
Which allows it to run at higher temperatures and create quite a bit more boost. The "normal" average temps on the exhaust side are higher, which I believe should go a long way towards keeping the HO motor cleaner.

Also, the 9th injector prevents fuel dilution of the oil. I'm not certain, but i don't think the SO gets the 9th injector.

Then there's the water jacket on the cold side, and the hotter tune.

HO all the way. it's more than just a better set of headers.

I've seen boost pressures as high as 38psi. I don't believe the SO can do that either.

There is no difference. I buy the cheapest stuff I can find at a reputable store with a date stamp. That is usually Walmart SuperTech.

Fair point and good question to gain other people's opinion. Based on my very limited knowledge, other than checking dates; I fall into the group of people who believe that using Pump DEF, (Buckees is my favorite) is better than store bought due to the turnover. I am never able to get a solid consensus on this one.

I just piss in the def tank every morning.
I would, but the alcohol content is too high.

Wally World or parts stores turn over enough DEF that it should be fresh. I literally just added 2 boxes from Walmart that were born 6 weeks ago.
Pump DEF is something I don’t trust any more. One, the chance for contamination is higher from tanks underground. Two, I don’t trust people not to intentionally contaminate the nozzle. I look both ways at roundabouts and right 2x on one waystreets. That’s how little trust I have.
The last time I used a pump, the upper level sensor took a poop. Coincidence? Maybe. But I’ve never had that happen in 100s of thousands of miles with the box.

For the old Dmax I would buy DEF at Costco (in store.) it was usually fresh. We did have to replace the tank due to a sensor issue but it was a common GM issue (EPA forced them to cover it under warranty) and that truck sat for months on end so I can’t say it was related to the DEF.

Being a GM you couldn’t use the pump stuff since the fill was on the passenger side under the hood so it always had cartons.

^ ^ ^ you are as defensive a driver as I am. This may stem from ridin' motorsickles.

Absolutely. I stopped riding on the street when a cop made a left in front of me and tested my ABS. I was on a BMW R1200 ADV with headlights and driving lights on in the daytime.
Everyone really is trying to kill you.

Whoever thought of that location should have their ding dong slammed in a door. 🤣

It was a nusiance, especially after leveling and put 255/80s on. The tank was terribly exposed on the passenger frame rail too.

hahaha

speaking of ding dong door slammin' GMs...

A buddy of mine runs an independent BMW repair, but he himself has a wealth of repair experience and an encyclopaedic repertoire of automotive history and vehicle specifcation... iow, there's nothin he cain't fix.

He's a Ford guy first and foremost, owning brass-era Model T's, nickel Model A's, '50s pickups and a '65 GT350 he's owned for 45 years. He does not cotton to GM.

This last factoid was on my mind when I strolled in one day for a visit and saw a ratty '68 Firebird convertible up on the lift... so I quipped, "I see you got that "great GM feeling" goin' on today!"

He replied with a sigh, "I'd rather slam my dick in a door than work on this POS, but it belongs to the wife of [so-and-so] and she likes it. It's a favor..."
