‘24 Owners Who Removed Tailgate

Unfortunately I do not have a before picture to compare, so I am not sure where he added the pin or pins. I believe it is these three greens pictured. It appears changes were only made to the "black" plug.

This is a warranty issue, so I would not be doing it myself, have Ford take care of it.

@timothymeyer Can't quite see where all the wires go. Is there a different camera angle you can do that will show it a little more clear? Maybe the same angle and orientation as my pic (for easier comparison)?

...and Ford signed off on it. Ha.
So I don’t know about in your circles of friends but in mine we have been talking about this for a couple years now with the culmination seeming to be now…. Its seems that the whole country got dumb these past two years. I’m not sure if it’s boomers aging out and young kids coming in or if Covid just made us all dumb…. But it seem no one is competent anymore. And this is not something I’m imagining I work for a multi-billion dollar company and we can’t do anything right…. It’s horrible and Incant explain it. Boeing, Toyota, Ford, Honda, pick a company…. They sure aren’t what they were just a few short years ago and again, I have no idea as to why. Rant over.

@TRAMPER This is how decisions are being made ...

I kind of agree with this lol. In this day and age after covid incompetence seems to be at an all time high and it is everywhere and in everything.

When you first removed tailgate did your auto folding mirrors not work and now they do since getting plug fixed? Exactly what issues did this resolved for you? Those larger green wires where do the go once they leave the black pigtail? Also thank you for posting!

I think a shot of the other side of that black connector on the jumper would be super helpful, if you would?

For reference, my jumper wiring looks the same as @Chadx , just flipped view so the order is reverse.

Yes, the new grounded jumper has fixed everything. Had to pull his tape off to see the greens, appears all three were just pigtailed together.

so those green wires are just shrink wrapped together on the end? that's it?

Shoot I just figured out I can’t even remove my dam tailgate.. it’s like stuck on there.. gunna have the dealer look at it

Mine was too. it was stuck on the passenger side hinge. I think the friction fit is just too tight. I just took the handle from a small breaker bar put it into the finger of a mechanics glove and gently pried up on the tailgate from the bottom and it came out without damaging anything. Oh and it you have the fancy lifting tailgate you have a small bracket on that right side hinge you need to remove first.

Those are perfect pictures. Thank you! Mind if I forward to my dealership?

The wiring solution is intriguing, but then I don't know how the internals of those connectors work. I guess in my head I assumed every pin was independent inside the plug. This solution makes it seem likely that one or more internal pins are internally connected to one or more other pins. If that is the case, then this solution is taking a pin that is grounded to another ground pin and passing that ground to two other pins, which syncs with what was discribed in the work order:
"NOTHING IN PINS OF HARNESS TO DISABLE TAILGATE AJAR MESSAGE, ADD PINS TO C4OO3 SIDE OF JUMPER TO GROUND AJAR SWITCHES, AJAR MESSAGE GONE"

I am now curious enough to want to open the connector and take a look inside. I don't know what type of size of pin are inside or if they are even needed. Perhaps only wire is needed. I might take a look over the long weekend. If it's a simple fix, go ahead and do it as I want it fixes ASAP and they will probably drag their feet. Oh, I'll still keep pinging my dealership until they are willing to do it or take a look, and that will help out other owners because I know some others came back to this same dealership with the issue. If I figure out how to do it, I'll just reverse it when they get around to taking a look. As we get dealerships to perform and confirm this is the fix, we just need to insist they call Ford and let them know as I'm sure there are a fair number of tickets open for this. Maybe someone will make a YT video an then the evidence will be there and that would be referenceable for anyone that wants to do it themselves or show to their dealership so they can fix it.

Went and grabbed the harness off the truck to take a look. I've gone as far as I'm willing to go at this point without more detailed info on this specific connector type due to fear of breaking.

Pulled the rear plate off and clicked some images. Then attempted to pull the front out, like is typical in other automotive connector, and it won't come any further than shown. But that may simply be as far as it needs to go to release the first internal pin lock and next step is push a pin-release tool into the tiny holes in the face of the connector to release pins to the rear. Wanted to at least see pins, but not tonight. Ah, well.

Anyone with deeper understanding of these specific connectors please pipe up.

So those green wires that were added to Tims were pushed into those tiny holes in the blue plastic?

The blue is really soft rubber (latex like) used for sealing out the weather I presume. The black fingers from the back plate are placeholders only on non-pinned spots and stick into the unpinned holes. The black finger would be removed when a new pinned wire is inserted.

@TRAMPER (or anyone with a '23) to the red phone. We need images of the wires going into the black connector from a 2023. There is a chance that various pickup trims have different wiring, but I think all pickups have tailgate ajar warning for when a tailgate is left down, don't they? If so, your '23 tailgate removal harness, which actually work, will likely have wires/pins in 2 and 3, which I suspect are the right and left tailgate clamp sensors. I suspect the tech that did the below work determined port 5 had good ground so he pinned that as an easy way to feed ground into ports 2 and 3.

From the various descriptions, it seems that the right and left tailgate clamps individually know if they are closed or not and the full closure grounds them, hence, if both of those wires, leading back to the computer are grounded, then computer interprets that as the clamps being closed. The tailgate removal harness should be doing that, but the '24 batch is missing pins/wires to ground those two ports all the time. This is all theory and I don't know which two of the three ports are actually the right and left tailgate clamps wires; could be 2/3, 2/5 or 3/5. The other is simply a convenient source of ground to feed ground to those other two.

So, would really like to see a '23 harness. Owner doesn't need to remove from the truck; just some clear pics of the plug so we can see all the wires going onto the top 6 and bottom 6 ports. When you post, please indicate it's a '23 (so everyone keeps that clear) and also indicate your trim level. Thanks in advance!

Edit: I'm editing to note that further down this thread, we discuss and discover the official pin position numbers for these location.
They are positions 14, 13 and 11. Reference updated image in post https://www.fordtremor.com/threads/24-owners-who-removed-tailgate.18096/post-404316.
