‘24 Owners Who Removed Tailgate

...The [camera] one I got from camera source works perfectly in my '24. I believe they use an OEM camera, so that would make sense.

The one I bought off of ebay was supposed to be OEM but you never know and it didn't work. Others have bought random ones off ebay and they work for one pickup owner but not the next. There is another ebay seller that removes OEM ones from trucks and sells them and some have had success with his, but some have not. So still not sure what is allowing some cameras, with the same part number, to work or not work on a give VIN.

I was given two numbers to call to speak to Ford further about this issue:

1-800-232-5952
1-800-392-3673

I'll be calling today. If everyone took 10 minutes to call them it would help keep pressure on.

I'll give it a whirl! Did you have your dealership appointment and the result was "You call Ford"? Or has the dealership not yet looked at the truck? Curious if you were given these numbers by the dealership, Ford website chat, or some other source. Thanks.

I got the numbers from Ford chat. I haven't had time yet to get the truck into my dealer.

I have the same exact issue, have not gotten to the dealer yet.

@Chadx I have a very similar setup to you - non Tremor Lariat SC 7.3, STC #103. You also camped with my buddy from Co. Springs!

Number 73 here, 12,500 miles on it already and still can’t say enough great things.

I took my '24 F-350 into the dealer a couple of weeks ago and they originally thought it was a cable pin-out mismatch issue. They did open a ticket with Ford but there is still no resolution. Last I talked to the service writer he said they thought it might be a "module" issue, which I interpreted as meaning more than just a cable pin-out issue.

Took my truck in last Friday to the dealer. Service confirmed the issue and wrote a ticket. Said hopefully Ford comes up with a fix soon. About all the can do currently is reprogram the truck to ignore the tailgate and reprogram it when I put the tailgate back on. At least they did update the latest Sync software update that failed to load with the auto update.

Glad they opened a ticket for it.
Reprogramming (even seasonally) would be great and my dealership first said that was something they could do. I said do it since it was already there. Once they tried, they said the computer wouldn't let them reprogram the truck to ignore the tailgate on Lariat and above. I see from your previous post that yours is a "2024 F350 Lariat with the ultimate package". So did they try to reprogram it to ignore the tailgate and was it successful? I have since programmed some changes to my '24 Lariat with FORScan, but not found anything to turn off the tailgate check. So curious if you had it programmed, intend to, or are not going to even bother trying? Thanks.

Sound like the did try the programing to ignore the tailgate but when they did the camera did not work. For now I just intend to live with the message so that I can still use my extra camera. Does FORScan have a Pickup bed configuration option? According to the service report the option to ignore the tailgate is in Pickup bed configuration. Attached it the description from my service report.

My service writer told me the same thing yesterday... that they could program it for when the tailgate is off, and then when it is back on again. They did acknowledge that Ford is working on a solution so that the tailgate delete harness works as it was intended. I also had the AC issue (evidently common) crop up within the last 2 weeks and they said Ford is also working on a solution for that. I have read about compressors and various components being replaced, but my service writer said it was a "programming" issue with the internal ambient temperature probe and the "Auto" strategy, not a mechanical issue. We'll see.

Has anyone received a recent update about this?

I've not, but I've not called on the open ticket # my dealership got from Ford when they could not resolve.
But I don't expect resolution anytime soon, honestly. I think the '23 guys are still waiting for a fix where all their 360 cameras go dead if they unplug their tailgate/backup camera.

Just took my tailgate off and I get a message that rear sensors are blocked and no rear sensors. Are you guys getting this too? My tailgate also shows ajar.

edit: mine is ‘24 Lariat Ult, build date 06/24. Re-read posts and looks like others have my issue. I do not get a tailgate ajar notice though. Just the icon in red. Autofold mirrors do not work as expected. Is it possible to undo the harnesses and put in plugs while the tailgate is attached and then lower tailgate and remove? Maybe that clears the issue…?

The "rear parking sensor blocked" would seem to be something that comes up more when you have trailer connected or something immediately behind the bumper sensors (like my receiver hitch with crossbar for the rocktamer mudflaps). Should have nothing to do with tailgate being removed as the sensors are in the bumper; not the tailgate.

Besides the "tailgate ajar", the other message I get is that 'Backup brake assist' is unavailable and to see owner's manual.

As for your question of
"Is it possible to undo the harnesses and put in plugs while the tailgate is attached and then lower tailgate and remove? Maybe that clears the issue…?"

The sensors are active so it doesn't matter in what order you remove the harness, plug what back in and then undo, as far as the "tailgate ajar" message. I rolled my tailgate on a dolly under the truck and plugged everything back in and it all worked (after I physically flipped the two tailgate latches closed on the tailgate itself, of course, because that is what the tailgate ajar sensors detect. As soon as I released those latches or unplugged the tailgate, back to the "tailgate ajar" message). I suspect that would be the same for your "rear sensors blocked". The sensors really should be unaffected by tailgate being removed as those are in the bumper. They should be unaffected by tailgate position, camera being removed, etc. but with how intertwined all these sensors and cables are, never say never. I don't think a layer of dust would effect the backup sensors, but a layer of mud might.

I took my tailgate off yesterday to load my camper and I didn't get the rear sensors are blocked message until I loaded my camper. My camper does not hang down past the bumper but sticks out about 18 inches so maybe its close enough to cause the message. As far as I know Ford has not come up with a fix for the tail gate ajar message since they wrote a ticket on my truck in early June.

For more data, I got that message when the tailgate was down. I figured that was normal as the overhang of the tailgate would effect the sensors.

I'll be calling the dealer today to set up an appointment and get a case started.

@Ejl04 and @cr500rider
Thanks for the data. Those sensors must have extremely wide field of view, so both scenarios (camper overhang and tailgate attached and lowered) make sense. Thanks.

Probably the reason Ford put Sensors and a camera in the top edge of the tailgate on the powered tailgates so they both function when the tailgate is down. I did mount a factory tailgate camera into a camera housing and attached it to my camper which restored my backup view and 360 camera view.

Nice. That is what I did on my '24. With the '24, the other 360 cameras were not impacted by unplugging the backup camera; only the backup view. As mentioned previously, I bought an ebay "OEM camera" and tried with aftermarket housing and cable, but it didn't work so I returned the camera. I pulled the camera out of tailgate and that worked, so that is what was installed and bonded inside the aftermarket housing on my camper. Funny the camera subject should come up again today because fedex just dropped off another camera. This one ordered direct from Ford. I was going to try the ebay seller that removes OEM cameras and some have had success with, but the Ford point I received when I bought the truck are going away in October (unless I get a Ford credit card which seems kind of greasy on Fords part). Anyway, I burned all the points I received which was $210 worth. The camera cost me $103 out of pocket.

I'll plug the camera into the tailgate cable but not fully install until I test. Since camper will be on until at least October, I'll do what I did before and roll the tailgate on a dolly under the truck and plug in everything. Once confirmed camera works, then I'll complete the tailgate backup camera install and button everything up. Then I can be confident that, come winter when camper comes off and tailgate goes back on, I'll be ready to go. ...And will have 4 or 5 months of relief of the dang "Tailgate Ajar" message. Ha.

Update: Camera part # PJ7Z-19G490-B, ordered directly from Ford, worked like a charm when I tested with tailgate on a furniture dolly rolled under the truck and plugged the camera into the stock tailgate harness. (No change to Tailgate Ajar issue, of course, but mentioning since backup camera became part of this thread). As mentioned previously, the same part number, purchased from an "OEM" source on ebay, had not worked.

With everything confirmed, I installed the camera into it's housing, put the tailgate panel back together and re-installed in the tailgate. Only complication was getting the little lip of the foot wide camera/light/handle panel under the black tailgate cap/trim. There wasn't an obvious or easy way to compress all the little black tailgate cap release connectors (squeezing with needlenose pliers from the inside wasn't quick or easy), so I ended up grabbing a couple of my plastic trim tools (cheapo amazon purchase that constantly comes in handy), got under the lip of the black tailgate trim piece, and slid the tool along the length of the camera/light/tailgate panel lip to flex the black cap over the top of the lip. Just mentioning it as it would likely be easy to not notice the trim overlap.

Area in question is circled in red. The painted component has a very small lip that has to go under the black tailgate cap. One can't insert the lip under the cap first because of the four tabs on the back of the camera/light/handle panel requires that panel to get seated straight down.
Orientation may look odd, but that is because the tailgate is laying flat on a furniture dolly and I'm looking down at it.
