My registration finally arrived today. Here is a timeline of events.
Truck was purchased on March 9th. I arrived in Des Moines and Granger picked me up from the airport. After arriving at the dealership, I was on my way in about 2 hrs. Everyone I delt with was fantastic. I wanted to pay for my state registration and sales tax when I returned to the DMV here in NV. I've done this before when purchasing a vehicle in UT and bringing it back to NV and it was a smooth process. I was told that I had to pay for the sales tax and registration in Iowa at the time of purchase. They, in turn, would pay NV and I would get a refund of any registration fee overage (I know there would be some because I was due credits for two vehicle sales in the prior months). I arrived back in LV, obtained a VIN inspection and had the paperwork dropped off in an overnight envelope on 3/12.
My 15 day Iowa permit was due to expire. I obtained a 30 movement permit from Nevada. The 30 day permit was now about a week from expiring. I went down to my local DMV and they were no help at all. I emailed Granger and they gave me the following timeline of the registration process.
- NV DMV received the paperwork on 4/03
- NV DMV estimates a 18 day turnaround
- Registration arrives at my house UPS overnight delivery on 4/27
That's a long time. There was a 3 week delay from me overnighting the paperwork needed to Granger and the NV DMV getting the paperwork. The registration arriving by UPS was sent from Agoura Hills, CA. Well that's weird. NV DMV would sent it out from Carson City. The company name on the envelope in CA is Vitu Interstate. They appear to be a third party handling out of state vehicle transactions. There is no requirement from NV for an out of state of dealer to collect the sales tax and obtain the registration that I know of. Perhaps it is a requirement in Iowa? I actually received the paperwork from Commerce Bank (their lender to get an additional 1% off) saying that the vehicle was paid in full before I received the vehicle registration.
I paid $1860 in "license fee" and the estimated registration fee in NV is $1090 (minus my credits). Now let's see how long it takes to get a refund of the difference. I would definitely still buy from Granger if doing it over and in the future. The purchase experience and the people were all excellent. However, this is one part of the process that could be improved upon. The 3 week delay (I don't know if it was on Granger's part or Vitu Interstate's part, not my concern) is unacceptable in my opinion.
