Sunroof glass shattering exploding for pretty much no reason at all

FWIW, my tint guy has had his own shop 25+ years and probably done 40+ of my vehicles as well as the trucks we buy for our service co. He will not tint sunroofs due to the possibility of the sunroof breaking due to the tint and the change in temp it creates. I have never got into the details with him and I don’t pretend to know much about tint/heat, but he sure won’t do it. Curious if any of the ones that shattered “pretty much due to nothing” were tinted.
none of the sunroofs I have seen shatter (at least half a dozen now in a 6month time frame) were tinted.

Well technically they are all tinted from the factory, but I know what you are saying.
Playing devils advocate though. I think a layer of tint film would actually be a good thing because it would hold the broken glass together and prevent pieces from falling in your face

Either way. It’s definitely an issue that needs to be addressed from a manufacturer level

Everything under the sun (no pun intended) has an expected failure rate. Everything. Given (again) that tinted glass has been on millions and millions of vehicles, and many of those have panoramic sunroofs (both Ford and others), it seems to me that if there were a broad systemic issue we'd hear about it constantly. Vehicle issues and recalls are delicious fodder for news and extremely clickbaity. If this were widespread, we'd hear about it more than via a few forum postings.

Not saying it isn't real for the people it happened to, or that it isn't a problem for them. But 100% not a broad widespread issue worthy of a huge level of concern. Far more likely to be manufacturing defects that are within the expected miniscule percentages. Or just bad luck.

Agreed, it's not an overwhelming issue or failure. My BIL had the rear window of his Tundra (the full roll down version) explode upon startup in the garage, shit happens.

Ok just throwing my hat in the bucket here. I live in Dubai so it's definitely not a heat thing. It gets to 132°F easily during the summer. And going from that into an air conditioned parking or vise versa causes a lot of condensation on the glass and extreme temp changes. I've had no issues with my panoramic glass. (knock on wood)

I do now have a new fear of driving behind trucks on the highway or friends down trails.

I’ve seen it twice, but they were not tinted. I think it’s just more prominent on sunroofs, because it’s a flat surface which probably gets more direct intense sunlight heating it up.
My back glass shattered yesterday. It was buldging from the inside out towards the bed with no holes. No debris, no damage. The glass and the window were pushed apart as if someone used their feet from the inside. Craziest thing.

Welp this just happened to me tonight in about 34 degree weather. Seemed pretty random didnt hear anything besides the shatter of glass all over me and into my eyes. 2022 Tremor 6.7 7k miles.
Same. 2nd time in 2 years. 34-35 degrees BAM

(note to self : Ask stripper to remove her heels before getting in the back seat)

My tint guy told me that if I tinted to pano moon roof that it could lead to the glass breaking.
I've lightly tinted every glass roof I've ever had, and never had one break.

Damn, I've never heard of this before. My truck has the pano moon roof and the shade is closed 98% of the time, I only have it because I bought used and it just happened to have it. If I was to spec a new truck I wouldn't get it.

It can happen, normally caused by an unseen defect in the glass. My friend had this happen to his side glass of his truck. He thought someone broke in, however a closer inspection revealed that the glass was pushed out and most of the glass was on the outside of the vehicle. Kind of crazy if you ask me. I am not a big fan of these panoroofs, in my opinion just a problem waiting to happen.

My driver side glass had an interior hairline crack near the edge (pic below). Replaced it myself pre-emptively, even though it didn't spread. Simple 30 minute job and the interior door panel doesn't need to come off.

Not sure if the seat belt buckle hit it at one point or if the side of my watch struck it when the window was partially down. Think it was probably just a defect.

I’m guessing the roof attachments for your roof are tight or out of spec for 2 failures. I used to run the moonroof line on another ford vehicle, they suck. The bender supplied the roof attachment brackets and the moonroof assembly. Supposed to be drop in no adjustment. All of them needed adjustment, way too many would not work.
