From my various research and details on the subject, Cali seems to be the state which tries to be the most progressive. Using that term very loosely, and staying away from politics the best I can. Vermont in many ways wants to be a little Cali at times...it's pretty dissapointing.
I know so many people who have left Cali and are very vocal about it (many to FL it seems). At some point there will be an awareness around the cost of living and the tax base shrinking even more. The push on green is a bit absurd when the infrastructure does not exist, and trying to hold the country to those standards is really aggravating right now.
Freedom is disappearing, but not in the ways where you can really put a finger on it unless you dig into it.
Fuel for my truck is currently at $4.99 to $5.29/gallon and that includes the state taxes. If you want to be a nerd I will post a link...

I know many "good ol' boys" running off-road in their trucks right now. I have seen more slip tanks than ever before in rigs. DOT will never be able to keep up with that - but you won't find me doing it. It's simply not worth it, but the increase in pricing will cause more people to curb their lifestyles in other ways. We have just stayed home for the past ~2 years and here's another reason not to travel. Just wait until this nails us at the grocery store, supply store, etc...
I will say, and DM me if you want to talk about this more because I want to be true to forum rules and regulations, our country has been focused on the most ridiculous things for the past ~10 years, almost like when you were a bored kid at home and came up with some really stupid ideas because you had nothing to do. This world is poking us in the eye right now reminding us what the USA should stand for and needs to stand-up for.
Buckle-up, Patriots. It's a powder keg.
