Gooseneck questions

I also have the Retrax tonneau cover. I don’t need to remove it for towing which is a huge help. I put the gooseneck directly on the bed when I first got the trailer (towing ball wasn’t installed yet) and grabbed some measurements over the bed rail. Easily have 7” of clearance with everything level so no worry of contact with bed or tonneau cover.

Last step is to grab a full weight distribution and the inner geek in me should be satisfied.
Great photos!

That looks like a great setup. How long is your trailer from front of goose to rear? I'll be 27' with the Elite setup. Do you know your fully loaded weight?

I have the Bak Revolver X4s Hard Roll Up Tonneau Cover which is great and will work with the goose.

“Box” of the trailer is 24’ 7”. It’s another. 8’ to center of the goose. The extender sits about 41” inside the bed (from the inside of tailgate).

GVWR of the trailer is 10,400 and curb weight is 7,680. Need to run it across the scales with my daughter’s horse in it, but we only haul her (the horse) and she’s about 900lbs. Empty holding tanks and full fresh water adds 400 lbs, plus another 200-300lbs of “stuff” in the LQ and we are about 9,300lbs.

I’m going to get a proper weight soon (currently winterized) and will post actual distribution numbers.

If you end up going aftermarket for the rear camera system, I’d be open to all opinions. I’m looking for something for backing up as well as for inside the trailer to keep an eye on “my investment.” 😂

Let us know what trailer you go with…and pictures!!!!

Nice truck and trailer! My current truck has the Ford Gooseneck Prep Package. In all previous trucks I have had the B & W Gooseneck Hitch...IMO, the best in the aftermarket.

Looks like I'm going to go with the Ford puck system. Going to get the 5th Wheel ford installed. B&W turnover ball is nice but you have to go under the wheel well to release where the Ford you just pull the hitch ball out no lever needed.

Next step is seeing once the trailer comes in but its looking like airbags will be needed and remote compressor.

I think you made the right choice.

There are some pros/cons to on board air that Id be happy to walkthrough with you when the time comes!

Also one thing to mention for those every looking at horse trailers. Elite came back to me asking for the bed rail height which is 58" for me and with the gooseneck they are at 61". So they are raising the GN by 3" so I have more room. Talking some another person at the barn with a F250 and GN they have that 3" difference and have to be careful when driving as they did hit once.

I have noticed most brands are starting to standardize approx 3" higher given how much taller trucks are coming from the factory.

I have seen many crushed truck beds....

Good catch.

You can remove the Ford ball in the same time it takes to flip the B&W ball. I’ve had the B&W in previous trucks, and have had the ford ball in my last two. I don’t have a preference either way. Both are good options.
And with GN hitch ball kits starting to run north of $300, I much prefer to remove it and avoid any potential theft.

You both make some Great Points! I too have seen a few crushed pickup box side panels. In addition, most trailer companies can adjust / increase the stance height of the trailer by using different options offered by the axle manufacturing company (Dexter Axles).

If possible, its always best when ordering new to have them adjust the gooseneck height in the design phase, which should keep the trailer level and retain the low load floor high for the ponies out back.

Sort of late, but I meant to update everyone. I ended up installing airbags in rear of the truck and using B&W with the handle instead of the flip-over.

New trailer attached as well. I've only noticed the 7.3L struggles a bit on hills. Otherwise, it pulls it great. Now, if I need to upgrade the trailer, it means a new truck with a w/diesel.
