Engine Idle Hours Ratio to Engine Hours

At my last oil change I was at 35,000 miles, 1,027 hours, 218 Idle. so 21%

Now that its winter idle % will be up on the next one.

I run so many highway miles that the idle time doesn’t matter to me. I’m in my truck 10 hours a day without ever turning it off. I’ve had numerous 6.7 power strokes starting back in 2013 and I have never once had ”knock on wood” emissions issues. I do believe the long highway trips makes the world of difference on that. Plus the addition of the 18k lb gooseneck trailer I pull on a regular basis.
 
At 6800 miles I’m at 253 engine hours and 51 idle hours so ~20%.

It seems like back when I had my 2011 6.7L everyone said to idle it so I’d let it idle while I was filling up, running into stores real quick, warming up or cooling off in the driveway, etc. Now it seems the majority say that idling can cause premature death in these engines so I try to shut it off as much as possible. That said, my truck tends to be my mobile office and living in Florida there are very few days where I can sit with the windows open for long and not be sweating to death. I only got this truck in November so I imagine come spring/summer/early fall I’ll be racking up the idle time trying to stay cool.

I'm only about 11K miles and my ratio is also ~ 75%/25%. I'm generous with my warm-ups in the winter months.
 
What The Dude's, and others', numbers also show is that so much of the USA's ICE caused pollution is due to all the unnecessary stop signs and stoplights. I ran some numbers a few years ago and calculated that at least 400,000 gallons PER DAY was being wasted thusly, and I think I was quite conservative in my calcs. One thing the Euros do right is roundabouts.
That’s an interesting point. They recently put a bunch of roundabouts in where I live at first I hated them some are pretty tight but it is better than sitting there with no traffic waiting for a light or getting a ticket for doing a California stop
 
My trucks tend to average 30% idle time. This is due to remote start + leaving it on in the winter when I am running errands (I don’t like to get into a cold truck). It tends to be the same for me whether it’s a gas or diesel truck.
Our fleet trucks are more like 50% idle time.

To let these trucks idle for 10 minutes is a waste of effort and fuel. I am in Texas and every area is different but even when it is 15 degrees start let it idle for 10 seconds and then drive easy for the first few miles. Been doing this for 20 years with a lot of trucks GM's, Fords and Rams.

Not just the idling, roundabouts are far more safe! I forget if they have fewer accidents by raw count, but the accidents they do have are generally much less severe, particularly compared to traffic lights.

I’m at about 34,000 miles with 912 engine hours and 179 idle hours. I have been very deliberate in avoiding unnecessary idle time. I also am off-road in 4 wheel drive often and have come to the conclusion that off road driving in 4low and low speed must account for a portion of so called idle hours. My guess is it helps calculate for “severe duty” maintenance.

I've brought this conversation up many times with activists and get the same response every time; why aren't we talking about that? It's one of those things that is so absurdly obvious that when posed with the question most seem immediately shocked they hadn't realized it themselves. Followed by confusion over why no one else had. Followed by the realization that they know others have and it's probably being suppressed or pushed out of the discussion. Followed by the realization the group(s) they are aligned with, working with, and/or working for -- aren't interested in actual results but rather the interests of those who fill their coffers.

Sucks, truly does.

Accompanying this obvious loss of opportunity to create less waste emissions, less wasted fuel -- is also the potential to gain enormous portions of your life back that are otherwise trivially wasted.

In the area I live -- we have a lot of old 'timed' or scheduled light intersections where it doesn't matter who is where -- it just rotates on a schedule. I can't tell you how many times I've seen 50+ vehicles wait at a red light for no one.

They have also thought it was cool and trendy to create bike paths that cross highways and added motion sensing lights that stop traffic with priority given to bikers. You'll see one rando on a bike stop a hundred+ cars as he crosses the highway. The lights will continue to stay red for a solid minute. No joke, full minute. Sometimes people will just run them after the cyclist/pedestrian crosses but often you'll just have cars waiting that full minute as it backs up, and up, until sometimes it even clogs intersections that could be half a mile away.

The sad reality is nobody goes and gets a civil engineering degree to advance in a highly rewarding career for.... the government.

No, government seems to create a work environment for underachievers whose most desirable job benefit is that ability to do mediocre or poor and not get fired.

Meanwhile, they'll pay $200k+ per stoplight because the Governor's cousin owns the company that makes them. -_-

Do any of you have a car that has auto-start-stop? This "feature" was made to address this very concern.

FWIW I can't stand it and none of my cars have it, but hey, it's out there and can be found on LOTS of cars since about 2014 or so.

No idea how it should be figured:
13,266 miles / 511 hours (100 idle + 411 normal) = average of 26mph
13,266 miles / 411 hours (411 normal only, figuring idle is a part of it) = average of 32.3mph
13,266 miles / 311 hours (removing 100 idle from 411 normal to give you "drive" hours) = average of 42.65mph

I'm going to say it has to be that the 411 hours represents the "drive" hours and the 100 hours is strictly idle hours, you would add them together to get the total engine hours. But I could easily be wrong. 🤷‍♂️

42.65 as an average MPH seems WAY to high to be realistic, and 26mph seems too low.
 
I'm sitting at 25% idle ratio and I try to always shut the truck off when I can. I think my high ratio is because I drive offroad a lot at the farm and those speeds are usually about idle speeds. My Trail Control gets used a lot on the road into the farm. I usually creep along below 10 mph.

I’m betting that engine hours is total time running regardless of movement. The easiest way I can think of to prove your assumption is to go to a dealer and check new trucks to see if any have idle hours that are higher than engine hours. Even one hour higher would prove your idea.
 
Engine hours should be like everything else with an hour meter - number of hours the engine has run (total hours on the engine; it might also count key on, engine off hours). Idle time is the number of them hours the engine was idling.
