You ever considered moving to America? We have our problems, but at least we’re not California. The TLDR of this is.....CA being CA doing CA things
The point of my point was that during those years they had an option. Any good dealer would understand what was at stake and urge their customers to take that option. The last sentence of your post referred to 2020's. All I was pointing out is that most people who have one bought in California during those years most likely have that derate. That really is besides the point. The point being, this is not just something pertaining to 23+ Tremor 350's.
Every day. Every…damn…dayYou ever considered moving to America? We have our problems, but at least we’re not California.
For fun I checked the paperwork on my'21 that had the GVWR derate and it was registered as commercial. My '23 without the derate is as well. No where on any of the paperwork did it have an option to opt out of this. Both were F-250 Tremors. I went F-250 on both to try and avoid the CA shenanigans as much as possible.I can confirm what @donmatteo is saying, every truck that I have had in California has been registered as commercial. I fought it some years back and was told by CA DMV that all trucks are required to be registered as a commercial vehicle which are basically taxed at a higher rate. Its California standard operating procedure, which is to fu#k everyone who makes a living for themselves. I'm paying over $6k a year in vehicle registration fees and $16k a year for insurance... and thats not counting my house.
They're still there. In fact, they're expanding the commercial side in a few years. Pulling into the commercial side when you're not supposed to irritates them. I know from experielce.I haven't had to call them in a long time. I just tried the number that's been in my phone for 20 years and it is disconnected. I haven't been up over Donner in a long time, but my guess is that the building is still there and they're still in business. Maybe they're not taking direct calls from the public anymore.
Can't fully recall for sure but there wouldn't have to be a derate option on a 250 back then as they were likely under 11,500 anyway. If I remember correctly, and I'm getting old so correctly is suspect, the 250 with the diesel was 10,900.For fun I checked the paperwork on my'21 that had the GVWR derate and it was registered as commercial. I'd live in California if I could live in a big fuck off Iron Man mansion off the hillside and had enough money the rules stop applying to me lol. Outside of that there's lots of beautiful country out there with less bureaucracy and woke agendas haha.Every day. Every…damn…day
Sorry to make light of your situation. I just don’t understand what has happened there. It is unrecognizable.Every day. Every…damn…day
I went to the CHP and posted it above but pretty much what you’re saying is incorrect based on what they said.Hoping the 7 pages before this answered your questions but if not I can speak from first hand experience on this one. That is a weight sticker for paying additional tax to the state of CA. It is only required if you register your vehicle as Commercial, AND use it to carry more than 10K pounds. If you have that sticker and you wish to carry more than 10K pounds you will also NEED to have a CA number AND a company name on both front doors of the vehicle.
If you do not use this for business then you need to go back to the DMV and register it as a vehicle and not a commercial truck. They'll give you a hard time but it'll save the 500ish$ for the "15" sticker.
RVs and personal vehicles do not need those stickers. RVs are their own category in the state and have their own rules, none of which require that sticker.
How you got the sticker, i suspect someone ticked the commercial box on the paperwork instead of the "auto" box.

The CHP said I can bypass the scales without a trailer but said I need to enter them if I'm towing so what you're saying tracks.Man, some folks are passionate about what they think they know! Most of the grief in this thread is due to folks understanding their own state laws, but not California laws. And, of course, some California bashing. I don't like our politics either.
Glad you got to the bottom of this. I'm in California and have gone through all of this. I always make sure my towing pickup is rated at 11,499 GVWR or less and has an unladen weight of 8,000 or less. One pound more, and you are running a weight sticker and technically must go through the scales. The weight stickers costs go up as you declare more weight. When I used to pull with a dually, I was stickered at 40, and it was expensive. The scales specifically exclude pickups, but the definition of a pickup is quite specific, and therein lies the problem. You also must keep a pickup bed on the truck. If you install a flatbed or utility body and you are over 10,000 gvwr, you are back into stickers and scales.
I rolled by the scales in my F250 Tremor last year with my 32' gooseneck and a big tractor on the deck, and for the first time ever, they chased me down and pulled me over. I have a CDL, medical card, etc., so good there, but he thought I was running an F350 and would be over 11,499. Once I showed him my F250 emblems and my 10,800 GVWR, he, of course, sent me on my way.
The 8000/11,500 standard has been in effect for years. They really need to raise the definition of pickup to more like 9k unladen and 14,500 GVWR. We aren't in the 70's anymore. I don't think the intention was to have 1-ton pickups go through the scales.
It is up to the officer's discretion as to how they enforce the rules. When we had a CHP terminal inspection for our small fleet, I queried the inspecting officer about different scenarios with our Ram 3500 dually as it related to scales. Technically, you must go through the scales, even if you have nothing in the bed, not towing, just out sightseeing, etc. But as you mentioned, they told me to please bypass the scales with no trailer, or even with an empty equipment trailer, or even with a lightly loaded equipment trailer. We don't want to see you in there. The ambiguity is troubling, but not an issue for us anymore as we sold all of our 11,500 or higher delivery trucks. The CHP said I can bypass the scales without a trailer but said I need to enter them if I'm towing so what you're saying tracks.
The 15 sticker I got was to cover off incase I have anything in the bed since I'm already at 12k. If / when I get a RV trailer, I'll up it to what I'll actually be running.

The discussion isn't about what the truck actually weights as it sits. The discussion is about the requirement to post the weight stickers or not. My truck, as I posted already, has a 12K GRVW rating which prompted the DMV to send the weight stickers. You're already at a GVW of 12k, without anything in the bed!? There's no way. Your GVW os probably around 8200lbs with occupants and a few items.
I suspect he meant his GVWR, not GVW. But that is a good distinction. If he is weight stickered at 15k, he could nearly haul a trailer that weighed 7k.You're already at a GVW of 12k, without anything in the bed!? There's no way. Your GVW os probably around 8200lbs with occupants and a few items.
