Auto Regen Question

Since I don’t have Forscan, how many miles or how long does a complete regen take? I’m coming up on 4K miles now and I have no idea if it’s happened yet or not. Been towing my trailer a lot since the first 1k mile break in period. Thanks.

It’s happened, many times at 4k

I'm approaching 1500 miles and I've already done two regens.

A full regen took me about 15- 20 minutes of driving, wasn't to long.

Ya, it takes a while to complete a regen. I would bet that you get a better regen while on the highway as opposed to putting around town so I always inhibit until I know I've got a highway stretch in front of me. It kills the MPG for that time but I don't think the overall effect on tank mpg is much. I've still achieved 20+ mpg on a tank that had a regen in the middle of it.

I also installed the high idle mod for the purpose of finishing a regen if I make it home before it finishes.

I know its probably fine if it doesn't complete a full regen, but the emissions system is expensive and I want to do everything I can to maintain good health.

It should regen to some extent every 500-600 miles or so. There is active regen and passive regen. These both happen on their own without the need for anything from the driver. The only indication of a "regen is decreased MPG and high exhaust temperatures.

Stop and go driving will likely trigger active regen where it requires the truck to add heat (fuel) to the exhaust to burn off the soot.

Long distance highway driving will likely trigger passive regen where the DPF gets hot enough on it own to burn off soot.

If I’m going understanding guu hi I’d correctly, my truck could have already performed a passive regen since almost all of my miles have been highway or towing on the highway mikes? Thanks.

My 2020 will regen faithfully every 497 miles almost without fail (towing heavy enough for passive regen to take place). This is regardless of soot load. Extreme cold will alter this though. Regen last about 35-40 miles at highway speed. Generally the truck will indicate 0-5% soot load when finished. My cts 3 will show 15-20% after regen. Not sure why they aren’t synced but I’ve learned to account for the difference. The crossover where the truck and cts read the same is around 25%. The cts reads increments of 1% and the truck reads increments of 5%. Regen is pretty predictable. If I get within a few miles of 497 driven and I will be shutting the truck down I will suspend regen until I’m back on the road long enough to complete a regen. If not I try to drive at a minimum until I can get one done.

When regen is happening g on the road you can tell by a drop in mileage on your instant mileage. When driving slowly or stopped like pulling into garage or parking spot you will here the exhaust system “ping” from the extra heat and also the def injector will “tick” at a rapid and regular rate that you can here coming from under the truck. You will also smell what people describe as a hot smell and or burning rubber or plastic smell. All normal

Ok. Thanks everyone for your help and for sharing your understanding and wisdom. Maybe Forscan is in my future just for the information it provides. Appreciated.

you can also use forscan to do a full regen in your driveway. takes 20 to 30 minutes. raises rpm to about 1600. don't touch your brakes, don't mess with your dash. just let it do it's thing. you will know when it's done.

I changed mine with Forscan and the auto regen check box WAS there for a couple months. Now its gone. Truck hasn't been in the shop or anything. Thoughts??

I mostly went by smell. I later installed a pair of Banks iDash gauges. Exhaust temps and even regen on/off display are an option.

I would use forscan again and verify the regen option didn't become disabled for some reason.

Got it but still can’t figure out how to enable manual regen
