Ham and CB radio mounted

I just finished installing the radios and mounting them on the console. Although they look to be very tall, they don't obstruct the view at all because they are below the hood line looking through the window. Both units are attached to a 3D printed base that sits on top of a Built-Rite console mount. The base also holds a remote speaker for the ICOM. I will probably modify the base so that the radios lean back a bit and lower the stack a tad.

The Ham radio is an ICOM IC-7000 and the CB is a Stryker SR-94HPC.

The ICOM is setup in a remote mount with the main radio body under the rear seat next to the antenna tuner. HF and UHF cables go out through the floor next to the rear sill plate. I made a 1" hole in the cab floor and fed the cables through a rubber gromet to fill the hole. I am going to have the antennas mounted to the toolbox in the bed (antennas not yet installed).

The CB is mounted on the top of the stack. It doesn't offer a remote mount setup.

There will be 3 antennas on the back of the truck when finished. CB antenna will have a quick connect so you can switch between a 3' firestick or a 102" stainless steel whip. HF will also have a quick connect to switch between various antennas but will primarily be a 20 meter single band whip. VHF/UHF will be a multi band center loaded coil.

Thought about going on the dash, but ended up going with the head on the overhead console. Was worried about the heat beating down on the radios during the summer, along with the high visibility for theft. The morons around here break into cars for much less than a radio on the dash these days.

Ran wires for head unit and a dashcam down drivers pillar, radio body mounted on the rear wall behind the passenger rear seat. Added an external speaker under the drivers seat. Mic next to drivers seat within easy reach.

Nice setup! I was planning to get the built right under seat panel and mount similar. I have a Lincoln 2 10/12 meter radio (that modified can cover 11 but FCC says no) i wish it had a detachable face. I haven’t decided how to use it yet. Was looking at an ICOM UHF/VHF with detachable face as well. And just a simple CB for other work.

Still working on my studying for my test so I haven’t gotten around to mounting yet.

That is a nice setup. I wish my transciever could cover the CB bands with transmit as well so I could get it all done with a single unit. Oh well, it's an FCC thing.

While I had seen that mount, it seemed a bit expensive to me. I used a 2' length of cold rolled steel from lowes. 3" wide x .120 thick. I drilled and tapped the holes for the radio mounts and used the wrench retainer bolt hole in the floor to hold it in place and ground it. BTW, us a 1/2" spacer under the plate to space it up off the carpet so you can torque the bolt down. Perfect fit.

What frequency range for the CB and how many channels?

The CB is actually a 10 meter transciever. It is, however, modifyable so that is setup for the US CB band with 40 channels as well as for FM and AM from 28.000 Mhz to 29.700 Mhz.

Thanks for the pics and the write up. I'm still contemplating my set up. Good to know that the IC-7000 on top of the built-right does not impede visibility. I had HF in my old truck and rarely used it except to occasionally listen to 27.185 AM, so not sure if I will go that route or just go with a dual band.

I drive a Wrangler and we all know where we take them. So enough said. I would like to get a CB for my wrangler that does a good job without breaking the laws. I have seen where people are taking CBs and making them into 2m HAM radios putting out too much wattage. Now with that said, I want a good ole chrome-faced CB. Don't ask me why but I just like the vintage look I suppose. I am not exactly against a new Uniden 520xl which is what I see a lot but would like to find one of those good ole 70s CBS to get started with. Is there anything I should look out for that proves this CB is legal and not tampered with? Thanks in advance.

The Cobra 29 classic is what you seek. Don't worry about proving the CB is legal, I have yet to see anyone check or even snoop around. How you conduct yourself on the air is more important. That's what gets eyebrows raised. Just buy the CB from a reputable source and you'll be just fine.

Any concerns about heat with the radios up on the dash like that? Feels like they would be roasted by the sun.

Had my rig there for 5.5 years, still works great, only issue is the led lights on the channel indicator slightly fade out in the heat of the day sitting in a closed vehicle, after awhile the leds brighten back up once a/c kicks in.

The CB on the top gets pretty warm, you are right. But it seems to be working alright. Never gets too hot to hold your hand on it. I was thinking about modifying the mount to cover the top of the CB with a sun visor type of shield but I think I will hold off unless there is a problem.

The ICOM below it is just the front panel mounted onto a 3D printed base with a remote speaker inside. The ICOM doesn't get warm at all.
