The only site that matters is Ford's, which has their towing guide. According to the chart on Page 24, a 2021 F250 7.3 with footnote 3, Tremor Package, the gooseneck maximum is 17,500.
By your guess, you're 4,500 pounds overweight. You're exceeding the maximum rating by 25%.
That's neat, but he doesn't have a diesel, and pursuant to the reference material, it's overloaded by 25%.
Anecdotally, see how the truck is squatting in the back, with the nose high? That's because it's overloaded by 25%.
You're making more of this than the OP meant it to be. He's simply explaining for the benefit of 7.3 owners how the truck performed pulling a high load weight/ GN trailer as a test. We all know the legal ramifications, but we are all curious as how our trucks perform at max loads. He also offered great first hand comparisons to trucks he has owned, and included important information about load distribution, trailer brake condition etc.First, that’s pin weight.
Second, at no point did I write that the diesel would do a better job. The truck is overweight. Diesel or gas, the Tremor does a poor job of towing big weight.
I for one appreciate very much when someone offers this level of analysis for those of us that regularly tow more modest loads but want to know where we are at regarding the truck's true capabilities. Knowing the 7.3/10 speed combo is offered in much heavier Ford platforms, obviously we aren't risking overloading the drivetrain on the high end of the load limits. The tires, suspension and brakes are the limiting factors.
Thanks @mra400ex for the great analysis and review of your 7.3 Tremor under extreme conditions. It's quite reassuring to know we can haul our family and say, a 12K trailer down the road safely and that it will perform well at the same time. ? ? ?
