I just forgot. Probably one of the more gruesome incidents I’ve ran across. It was 4th of July about 5-6 years ago, and we were camping at the family river spot. We had taken our 6 seater Can Am, and the wife, 5 year old nephew, and myself went for a cruise down the county road. We were 20+ miles back down dirt, and had zero cell service for 5+ miles. There was why I believed to be a “sketchy” family that lived at the end of the road, which I later learned not to be the case. Salt of the earth people just a bit hill Billy lol.
Anyways we’re cruising, and come across a tall SKINNY looking guy standing swaying at the base of a tree inside the branches. My immediate thought was drugs, and didn’t want to get near him as he seemed to be acting erratically. So I started to turn around as to not get too close. I can vividly remember taking one last look as my can am was now pointed in the opposite direction. I don’t think that kid would be alive today if not for me taking that look. During my 2 second glance the kid dropped. Not the kind of impaired fall, but the unconscious type of drop. That’s when I noticed the wrecked 4 wheeler behind the tree. As fast as I saw him fall I was on my feet running to him. When I arrived the kid was in dire condition. He had completely scalped himself from the top of his right eye to the back of his head. His scalp was pealed open both ways with and eye hanging out and bleeding profusely. My wife drove the can am to us, and got out to assist. She was able to lay his scalp back into place, and bandage it up to control bleeding as well as a couple of smaller lacerations on his body. We were scared for spinal injuries, and it turned out to be rightfully so. I stayed with him to help stabilize him while the wife took off to make a phone call. She ended up going to the family down the road, as they were the closest. From their they called life flight. It ended up being one of their grandchildren, and they were extremely grateful. The chopper arrived and airlifted him out.
He ended up ok after a long recovery, and we later learned he broke his back in 2 places. How he was able to stand was beyond us. If I hadn’t glanced back to see him fall there’s no telling how long he would’ve laid there bleeding and unconscious. The road we were on was rarely traveled, and for someone to see him lying at the base of a tree in grown up brush and branches was very unlikely. Luckily they were able to salvage his eye even though they initially thought he’d be blind out of it. There was quite a bit more less severe injuries and lacerations out of it,
