In other news...

Got the new 4-tooth larger sprocket installed, and the new chain cut at the proper length while on the bike. This D.I.D. chain tool is a good tool. I doubt I could have assembled the master link without it, either, since the side plate does not literally drop on. Needs to be pressed.

Gearing-wise, this is what this little bike needed. 6th (6-speed) is more usable, although I didn't buy this CRF300L for highway cruising. Since I've "shortened" the bike's effective final drive gear ratio, it does put the engine in a better part of it's power band to pull comfortably any grade at 65, and while it's busier at 70 MPH, it seems to require less throttle opening. The new gearing gives the throttle body air horn modification, ECU and Graves' pipe their sweet spot.

The 12oclock labs' SpeedoDRD is a neat device, too. Got my speedo right on the money, again.

Before the gearing change I had stopped using 1st on level pavement, starting instead in 2nd. 1st was just too short. Now, it's a freaking "granny" gear. Perfect for loading the bike into the bed of the Tremor. Haha. That's about it. I may find use for it on some sections of some trail. We'll see.

New tires are Michelin Anakee Wilds 90/90-21 and 120/80-18 since I'm still riding a fair bit of pavement.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Anakee Wilds. I just picked up a set for my 650 GS (110/80-19 and 140/80-17), but I'm still waiting on a wheelset to get built. Buchannan's is taking forever to make the spokes.

The Wilds on my little 286cc single cyl Honda are bias ply Anakee Wilds, whereas larger sizes are mostly radial ply construction.

I want some wheels made, myself. Gonna be the only way I can get a tire off and on is a standard, quality wheel rim. The Thai Honda (where the 300L is made) wheels are an 1/8" deeper at the bead! making trailside tire swaps almost impossible. Be nice to go tubeless, too.

I think I'm gonna need a bike from a higher pricepoint! There's only so much lipstick to put on this cute little pig. It's a good bike for the dough, though. Great for a senior "returning" rider!

Me neither. I wanted radials... but Mich no makey in little Honda sizes (120/80-18 rear, 90/90-21 front). Those that have run these all over continental Europe and beyond using Honda CRF 300Ls like the tire.

My neighbor down the street just bought his third KTM - he keeps 'em for years. 525, 1190 and now a new 1390. <--- He's selling his 1190 (which is the sole exception to his lengthy ownership and care of his machinery).

He has Michelin Anakee Adventures on his 1190 and loves them. When he's (he's almost finished 'em off! already) cooked the factory tire off of his new 1390, he's going w/ two new Anakee Adventures. Them're rad-dials, tubeless, and for a factory wheel, basically state-of-the-stainless-spoked-art in m/c wheels on those big KTMs.
