THIS IS WHAT GETS ME NERVOUS ABOUT GETTING A 5TH WHEEL AND MAYBE BEING OVER THE WEIGHT PAYLOAD

This is the video you need to see. New lifted short bed Super Duty, aftermarket wheels/tires, big 5th wheel, inexperienced driver.

I know it's a totally different class of trailer but what about an airstream? Lighter. More aerodynamic. Apparently tow really well. That way you don't have such a large, lumbering mass sitting above and behind you. Just curious. We don't have a travel trailer so I have no experience with them at all but what I see on the highways scares the hell out of me.

I've had 2 different 5th wheels. Maybe rent a couple times to see if you enjoy doing it before you jump into a major purchase like that. For me, I didnt use it enough and spent more time working on it than I did using it. And towing it wasn't enjoyable for me. After doing the rough math it cost me approximately $2200 per trip, and that was just the cost for the trailer (payment, insurance, reg, maintenance, etc.). I realized for the few times I actually need an RV I can rent and not have to deal with all the other things and save quite a bit of money. Other trips are spent in cabins and beach houses and its actually cheaper than the RV would be. Just a suggestion. RV life isn't for everyone.

Pretty tough driving, let alone towing in Icy conditions. Even harder towing down hill. This video was a better example of speed in these conditions than anything else.

Dumbest ever. Should never have been driving in that. You’re pulling your house. Just pull over, chill and wait it out. I feel horrible for the kid having to see that. Easily avoided. Ironman, gotta be ready for everything and take your time. Before every trip I take I actually watch these crash videos to remind me what can happen if I try and make good time. Ain’t worth it.
Couldn't agree more. That kid crying like that really got to me.

I’ve been asking questions and doing my DD and came across this. I was what I needed to see. Something to keep in mind.
Should have never been going that fast in that weather and road conditions.

Whenever I see videos like this I try to think what'd he do wrong, if anything, and what would I do differently given the same circumstances. Here's what I came up with:

1. Slow down, not sure how fast he was going but it seemed like it was too fast for my comfort on snow.
2. As a Texan, I've had several bad experiences driving on ice/snow, reiterating what I said above, I would likely have slowed WAY down and pulled over if there was a reasonable place to do it ... like a rest stop or hotel. Those type of stops may not have been available tho.

What do you all think?

Agreed with both of those.

Would also add:
* Chain up if there’s a safe spot to do it.
* Particularly if regularly going into the mountains where it could be snowing, particularly when towing, consider dedicated winter tires or at least winter rated all terrains (mountain snowflake symbol).

That lady shouldn't have stopped and got out of car in that spot either. Probably almost caused another collision/accident. People are stupid.
Alot of 'mega' RVers have more money than brains :censored:
