2024 30’ Airstream Flying Could

Picked it up in Baton Rouge, they took good care of us at Airstream of Louisiana/The RV Shop, had no idea the Super Bowl was there this week. I just don’t follow the NFL. Anyways, that was a good time because of all the extra security and event set up, it’s the cleanest NOLA has ever been! And we made it all the way to Pensacola, and are headed back to Virginia Beach.

No WDH and it’s towed great. It’s a little bouncy, so I’m debating on adding airbags or a shocker hitch. Semis suck me in a bit, but I’m not white knocking when it happens. It’s been a pretty stress free drive once I got used to the length and width of the trailer. I should take it to a Cat scale soon though. Just gotta figure out all the weight measurements I need to take and how to do that.
L-I-V-E-N!! 👏

Sweet Rig!

Why are you only looking at fiberglass?

Airstreams with front beds have a tendency to separate from the frame at the front. The front storage hatch required some reinforcement removal to make it accessible. There is a belief that WDHs can cause it because of the forces on the frame. It’s not common at all, but is a known issue, like CP4s.

Well I currently own one and I find them to be the best material to make a camper from. Stronger, quieter, better thermal barrier, hold their value extremely well, etc. The build quality of the high end FGRV's is unmatched by the stick and staple and aluminum options as well. The only drawbacks are layout possibilities and the lack of slide outs but the latter isn't for me so that's a non-factor.

This is very true. I have a Bigfoot 21RB I bought new in 2004 and it's been a fantastic trailer in terms of quiet with wicked insulation. They're rugged too. I've been looking at upgrading length, and an Airsteam with a rear barn door is on my list. I really like the new Brinkley but 34' stem to stern is a concern. Always tradeoffs of one thing for another.

I think that 25’ or 27’ Airstream with the rear hatch is awesome. We ended up with the bunk because of the kids. An ATC would be great too. Could put a small boat in there on a trailer and go all over FL and the Gulf of America enjoying the land and the water. Or have a place to just change over after getting dirty or ditching skis or whatever from whatever other adventure because you can just pressure wash them out after.

I wish there were a fiberglass toy hauler though. The Olivers with their double hull had a huge draw for me.

Oliver is tits indeed but Escape, Bigfoot and Cortes all make double hull trailers as well.

I like the Cortes. You can pressure wash that one out too. They just need to make their 27’.

Only things I don't like about their trailers is the new frameless design and their bath and dinette setups suck. A doorless wet bath and a single seat dinette, WTF?! I have faith that they will eventually get it right and have a top tier option in the FGRV segment. They are the newcomer to the game and it has been impressive to see what they've pumped out in such short order.

It maybe the roads in that part of the county. Luisiana, Alabama, Miss, Birmingham have the worst concrete interstates. Georgia is smooth and I don’t experience the bounce. I have a 2022 F250 Tremor pulling a 30’ Serenity and live this thing!! Pulls at 75-80 no problem with sway bars attached.

Nice setup. I would stay away from WDH unless its needed. Easier to setup and less stress on TT frame. Go with air bags to bring back suspension travel unlike larger bump stops.

I can't appreciate the airstream thing but they are nice trailers. Looking to downsize from large 40ft toy hauler fifth to TT toy hauler. Family doesn't camp much and if its just me with Harley I don't need the whole 40ft of trailer. LOL

A while ago I had reason to tow a skid-steer a couple hundred miles on a semi-regular basis. I did it with a tag along trailer and my old F-350 and it was terrifying. I bought a Blue Ox WDH and it made all the difference in the world. Took a lot of weight off on the tongue and put it on the truck, and took all the sway out of it. Very impressed with the product.

I sold the skid steer some time ago and now the hitch sits in a corner of my garage collecting an impressive amount of dust. It looks like I'm close to you in Virginia Beach. If you want to use it to see if it makes a difference in towing your Airstream let me know and I'll rent it to you for a handshake and a friendly conversation.

That's a nice rig! Looks like mine, I have a 22 black package pulling a 30' flying cloud and we love the hell out of this setup. I use the Anderson WDH setup and IMO its one of the best I've ever had. The Airstreams are a choice for sure, I sometimes miss my 32' Forest River 5th wheel, but nothing pulls like this airstream. I know it may be a little controversial on this site but I would like to hook it up to a non tremor once to see what it would be like. The gearing can be fun in these trucks but it sure kills the gas milage! Enjoy the Drive!

Looks great! Congratulations.

A WDH makes a difference towing heavier loads, particularly if the load has a lot of sail area and it’s windy, but that trailer is only about 50% of the weight your truck is rated to tow, and your truck is anchored nicely by the weight of the diesel. It’s a matter of personal preference, but I don’t worry about a WDH with very light trailers that are properly balanced.

Not sure if you know, but this is what you wax your AS with, and only this.. YOu can only go with the grain of the aluminum or you will risk scratching it. So Horizontal polish and wash strokes only. The front and back Caps are vertical, up and down.

If you have any Scuffs use the 3M produces that are very light abrasive. Never us a sponge that has the scrubber on the back.

Any tips from your side please pass them back over

Nice setup! I tow a 23' International no WDH. I installed Timbrens to reduce some squat.
How do the Timbrens do with load on the as far as driving/ride comfort?

To be honest I don't know if any better or worse. The truck ride is quite harsh regardless if the roads are not smooth. I know the truck doesn't squat much and I had to do a serious emergency brake while towing and was drama free. I also use the trucks trailer sway control. In west Texas was very windy, so I just slowed down.

With and without the trailer. If I’m doing the math right, puts me at 900lbs
tongue weight, or 12% of the trailer. We still have more to put in there, and this was taken with a full fresh water tank.

Sounds right. I suggest you get a WDH to shift some more of that weight to the front axle.
