I read the posts since the one I chose to quote and all considered, whatever machine is acceptable to both your family and FIL and is physically sized right for your son is great. It's a wonderful opportunity to provide lifelong memories to treasure, however many wheels.
I guess I’m getting old, but I think I agree with gramps. I cringe whenever somebody wants to ride the 4-wheeler at my farm. Too many dip shits around who didn’t grow up around them and develop the self-preservation instinct from riding quads and 3-wheelers.
That’s true. It’s not the 4-wheeler, it’s how people ride them. But I do find myself leaning more towards the side by sides now since they have roll cages. Lol. I sometimes don’t trust myself on a 4-wheeler! Haha!

I have the opposite feeling. I think side by sides are cool but I don't like being in the cage. I've always loved 4 wheelers for the simple fact that I can ditch it when needed. I've rolled a couple doing the "Arab two-wheeling"
The youth machines are fine to start out but they are quickly out grown. They are 2wd only usually and tend to ride rough. My nephew is 11 and my buddy's kid is 10 and we got them the full size Polaris Ace. The Ace 325 has enough power to be fun but not enough to get them into trouble. They are basically an ATV with a roll cage. My buddy found a good deal on a 570 and his kid can keep up with my X3 in the woods unless I'm trying to outrun them.
Took them down to Badlands offroad park earlier this year and they could go everywhere the full size machines could.
Getting my son a Dirtbike for Xmas this year, so naturally that means I have to buy one as well. Been over 15 years since I've rode so I'm sure a ton has changed. I used to ride an 04 CR125 on logging trails and remember how much I had to wrestle the damn thing around deff wasnt the optimal bike for what trail we had around. Im looking for something a little more easy to manage but still has that getup and go able to twist the throttle and pop that front wheel right up. I'm thinking a 2026 Honda CRF300F or maybe a lightly used CRF250F. Had contemplated a crf250rx but think thatll be more than i need just getting back into it especially following my son on trails at slow speed. Does anyone have experience with these bikes I'm thinking they should keep me happy and have more capability and power then I'll have ability right now. I know it'll deff be a different power than what I grew up on but thinking they should work.

I've been out of the game for quite some time as well. My last bike was a CRF250X. Loved it but it could be a bit finicky at times - hot starts in particular, even with electric start. I don't think I would choose that if the primary purpose is riding with a young beginner. The F looks like a better fit in that regards.
We just bought a Polaris Ranger XP1000. Love it so far.

Look into Beta. I rode a '25 X-Pro 300, and also hear great things about the 350 RX/390 RR as well. My current rides aer a '22 Husqvarna FE 350 and '20 KTM 790 R.
I've been riding trails for about 20 years now and have ridden a lot of the newer trail bikes. Grew up riding MX bikes on the trails and that plain sucks as you get older lol. The weight on some of the 4T trail bikes these days is...unnecessary. My 2023 KLX300R weighs almost 300lbs wet. My buddy's CRF250F is not far behind it. None of them are light by any means unless you go down to like a KLX230R or something and even those are almost 250lbs. Picked up a 2025 Husqvarna TE300 this year after riding a buddy's 2016 and I don't know if I'll ever find anything better. Plenty of power (plus easy mods for more) and from the cockpit it feels like a 125 motocrosser weight-wise. Good friend of mine picked up his 2026 Beta 200RR from the dealership last week. Cool bikes but still carbureted.
I vote Husqvarna TE150 or TE300 (or the orange versions if you prefer PDS over linkage) depending on how much power you want. The Austrians knocked it out of the park with the new TBI system. The 200RR is super cool too if you don't mind the carburetor.
You could always try to find some demo days nearby and go ride some bikes.

I wish KTM would bring back the 200. The Beta 200 is alright. I am a fan of the 300's if you're thinking smoker.

4 stroke 6 speed is where it's at. I've unloaded all my bikes besides the harley at this point but prior I've had a WR450, 450EX, 525SX, and last an FE350. A 4 stroke enduro / trail style bike would be the most comfortable / forgiving for you. More ass in the seat as we get older, not hitting whoops or tabletops and stuff. The rowdy 2 strokes are fun to watch but riding the damn things are another story.

4-strokes are great too, especially as enduros, but I pick a wide ratio transmission 300 smoker in the woods every single day and twice on Sunday.
