My 2024 F-350 HO was purchased used with Carli e-Venture and has 34,300 miles and the 37x12.5R20 Toyo ATs (on Innov8s) have a tread depth of 7/32s, meaning I already need to be thinking about a replacement set within a year. My main use occasion is towing a 31 ft Airstream, then using the truck on a farm. I don’t daily commute with the truck. I’m located in the Shenandoah Valley, VA, so we get some snow and rain. I only do occasional off-roading. This is my first SuperDuty.

When reviewing tire options, I find many reviews are generic. Tire Rack ratings aren’t specific for my truck, tire / wheel combination or suspension. In reviewing my short list:

- Toyo AT3
- BFG KO3
- Falken AT4W
- Mickey Thompson Baja AT
- Nitto Terra Grappler G3

I find loads of folks love their Falkens for longevity and ride quality, for example. However, in my tire size, Falkens (84 lbs) are 12% heavier than my Toyo AT3s. Why is this important? Because I understand the reducing unsprung mass lets the shocks and springs control the wheels more effectively, which improves compliance, reduces harshness, and helps the truck feel more composed. Heavier tires work against that, at least in theory. So might sidewall stiffness (KOs are F rated and although only 2 lbs heavier, are stiffer). They also have balancing issues.

Acceleration and braking are also affected, though one might argue the HO 6.7 and massive brakes won’t “feel” the difference.

I’ve got no reference point for the AT3s except to say they wear quickly (despite rotations) and are getting louder (not obnoxious) on the highway, especially when towing. Otherwise, the ride quality and responsiveness has been superb both on off-road (don’t know how much of this is Carli vs the Toyos). Do I replace with another set of the same (the devil I know), or “upgrade”?

Can somebody with relevant experience, similar rig and/or expertise please advise what they would choose for my specific needs and why? Thanks!

OP I’ve contemplated this question many times and my research and “gut” keeps me going back to the Toyo AT3. As someone who does a lot of street/highway driving with the occasional off roading, the tire weight was a big thing for me. The handling, braking etc. are all effected by big heavy tires. I think the Toyo AT3 is just about the best tire, all things considered, for these trucks. If I went off road more or didn’t care about winter weather I may go to an MT but for now I am team Toyo AT3 and I will continue to be (although the Falken AT4w is enticing too)

Choosing tires is about as subjective as choosing oil, but in your shoes I would go with the Baja ATs. I have towed 10,000 miles with my Baja Legend EXPs and they have done great. A little noisy but they are ~10 lb lighter than other options and balanced perfectly. They are wearing evenly. I have read good things about the Baja ATs and believe in the Mickey Thompson brand.

Thanks. The Falken’s weigh about 12lb more than the Toyos. I’m concerned that will affect the active suspension.

It’s interesting how MT users are very loyal to their brand. I’ve come across reviews saying they’re challenging to balance, like the KO3s. I love the looks!

You guys are talking about 12 lb difference per tire on an 8,000lb vehicle with high dollar upgraded suspension components and 1,200 lb/ft of torque.
:ROFLMAO:

My advice.. drop the 20" rim idea. it's gonna ride like shit and look even worse. 18s are the sweet spot.

Unsprung wheel weight is a laughable concept and damn near irrelevant on these vehicles.

Toyo and Falken are what i would recommend. BFG ain't what they used to be, and the Mickeys are now owned by Goodyear. I've never driven a set, but hear they're in the conversation. I didn't go for them because I have a personal dislike of anything Goodyear.

Look for the tire with the best (most and deepest) siping pattern. Then decide on compound hardness.

Softer compounds like the the Toyo At3 and Falken At3 sacrifice longevity for great traction

The falken At4 sacrifices a little traction for longevity compared to the other 2.

BFG used to be my favorite, but that was in the days of the original AT/KO..

I moved on after not being happy with the KO2 and never looked back.

I would go for the softer compound out east Here in the Rockies, i need the extra toughness of the hard compound, and put on 25k miles a year so longevity is crucial

I'm currently running 37"Falken RT01HDS, and had them fully siped by the tire shop at install to help with ice traction. Dry road handling and towing stability have both been a very pleasant surprise.

Also tire pressure plays a much larger role than most realize.

toyo: probably the best all around on the list. they do wear quicker.

bfg: many reports of bad balancing, unable to balance

falken at4w: balance great, smooth riding, great tread life. suck in snow. i noticed right away truck would drift instead of track. i got stuck on flat ground, packed snow, not high sided. i had to dig down to pavement to get any traction.

mickey thompson: i wanted these to work for me. they look great and have good reviews. however, 2 of mine were out of round, excessive road force. they would not balance, horrible ride. the 2 replacements were the same, excessive road force. swapped for the falkens

nitto terra g3: look good, minimal reviews. the 37s seem to not really be available yet

You have the 20" wheels, or you're thinking about them? I've got their 18's. 18's are the way to go for the ride. Tire-wise I run down to 50% and call it a day, with no complaints with my AT3's. Whichever way you go, we all like the collective feedback for when it's our turn to replace tires, so keep us informed.

Yes. Looks are subjective.

Personally i don't like Steamroller rims.

Personal taste aside, i agree that 18" is the right balance between good diving dynamics and ride quality.

More sidewall also means less shock wear.

Everything is a trade off with tires.

One must prioritize, and decide where to compromise.
