Oil filters

Always run motorcraft on Fords. Fram on everything else. Never had any issues with either. I like that it's all available at walmart in the event something happens I can easily get what I need pretty much anywhere. Can't do that as easy with some of the boutique brands.

For some time, not sure now, Cummins said Fram filters were either not recommended, or not allowed. The reason was the filter media was water soluble, So, if too much moisture got in the oil, you ended up with a bunch of wet paper going through the system and clogging the piston cooling jets, etc. Cummins has their own Stratapore filters which are excellent, and Ram sells them under the Mopar name. I have never run any filter other than Cummins Stratapore on any of my three Cummins trucks. Going from that kind of standard, I wanted to make sure I start out right with the 7.3. And it sounds like Motorcraft is the way to go. And only $4.00? Sheesh. Cheap. There may very well be other ones that are better, but being OEM and factory recommended means a lot.

It reminds me of K&N air filters. "Oh, they are so wonderful and flow so much more air", etc. Of course they do, because they let larger particles through. More sand. Even their own literature talks about how they work better as they get dirty. That means the passages get smaller as they clog, which lets only smaller particles through, so they filter better when dirty. Hilarious.
K&N flowed LESS air than the stock paper element on my motorcycle. We discovered this when testing them on a dyno. I steer clear of them. Fram has had catastrophic failures. Motorcraft and Baldwin fleet filters are probably good choices.

Motorcraft 820S for me, I will be switching over to AMSOIL after a few more thousand miles and then use the AMSOIL Filter. For the first 10,000 miles its Motorcraft oil and filter. My break in plan, First change 1,000 miles then every 3,000. Its all available at Walmart, I just got the 820 filter yesterday for under 3 bucks and the Motorcraft oil was 19.99 for 5 qts. I am thrilled with the Amsoil in my 6.7 but past my "break in" I am not concerned with warranty issues and use of Amsoil products.

The Fram filters have a bad rep. I avoid them at all cost and the K&N are not much better. Wix filters are very good but can be pricy.
I think the deal with Fram and K&N its easy to cross reference them.
