I can appreciate your question and statement as I viewed crash data and statistics a couple times a year when I owned a multi-product line insurance agency. I've also been at the scene of a few horrible vehicle crashes. Many drivers have no clue whatsoever of the physics involved or the gore of mutilated bodies resulting from a vehicle crash. Picture a Mini Version CAT 5 Tornado confined to a 6' x 8' metal box with human beings inside. So, yes...securing a seatbelt restraint is critical while operating a vehicle during normal circumstances. Lastly, the word 'crash' is a more appropriate term than the word 'accident'. Auto / Vehicle Crash instead of Auto / Vehicle Accident. Very few of these 'incidents' are actually 'accidents'.
Yeah, the 'seatbelt police'...ha! The Nanny State trying to protect everyone. I certainly do not need anyone ...the government, auto manufacturer, fire department, law enforcement, etc. to compel, enforce, require the use of a seatbelt in a vehicle. I don't need an audible or visual reminder to secure a seatbelt restraint. I know exactly when to buckle up and it certainly is not when I am operating any type of vehicle to go 100 feet or a mile in rural / remote areas, on a farm, ranch, off-road on a jeep trail without slopes, or low 10 - 25 mph driving on specific sections of a dirt / gravel road. Simply put, there are numerous situations that are not practical or necessary to use a seatbelt. Kudos to Ford for respecting my freedoms by allowing me to choose to disable the seatbelt visual indicator and audible warning!
