Factory winch just died

Sure would be a shame if just before you took it in somebody just happened to steal the rope off your truck.;)
Lol! I know lots of folks would do that, but it’s not the way I roll. Happy to push back if I feel I’ve been wronged (e.g. they try to deny warranty), but stuff like this I just ask the questions and accept the answers.

I can see the reasoning for wanting the rope back as a part of investigating the failure.

I was bummed I didn’t get a factory winch but it seems like issues with it are popping up. I was fortunate enough to have a lady hit my bumper and make the decision easy for me. After seeing this thread I couldn’t be happier with the direction I went. Plus replacing an Apex winch is very easy. I think the final product came out great. Posting incase people are interested in different options.
whats the manufacture of the bumper ?
thank you

Following. Previous experience here in Washington with trips into Northern BC. The contactor box and associated parts is completely exposed to all the road salt and crap. While they may have a water rating the first unit was a corroded ugly mess. Had the 2nd one sprayed with "corrosion fluid film" (pick your product) flooded all the relays, wire terminals before tightening and connectors. Messy as heck but it has held up this time. If I had a choice next time I would move it some where less exposed. Flooded the winch terminals and all the attached hardware as well. Not much paint on the metal parts.

Ham will do that to you lol.

On the drag part, I really am struggling with modern day service and how anyone who relies on their vehicle for income survives a mechanical failure.

“Well, we’re booking 3 weeks out before we can get you in to look at it. Then it will be another week to get parts. Then another 3 weeks before we can get you in again to install those parts. Sorry about being without income for 7 weeks.”

(Yes, I was being optimistic when saying parts could be acquired in a week.)
Took my truck in a couple weeks ago for warranty and recall work, minor stuff, with an appointment made weeks earlier. Was told it would take only an hour or so. Got there when the doors open and the service advisor that booked me in said it would take all day and recommended leaving the truck!??? Even when I explained the planned appointment and the nature of the work he insisted it could take all day. 😠 Told him I would be in the waiting room and to call me when done. Sitting in the waiting room, several others with appointments rolled in and joined me. Over the next two hours it was amazing the number of people that were approached by the service advisor and told they were out of oil filters, air filter elements, cabin filters, etc and that they would have to leave the vehicle or reschedule! Everyone in the room was looking at each other with exasperation knowing this was a planned routine service and yet no inventory of basic supplies. I got on Amazon on my phone and looked up filters that could be bought in boxes of 10 and delivered the next day. Really?? Nevertheless my truck was done shortly and I felt bad for everybody else. It blows my mind when I think about it.

That's absolutely insane. I get that parts can be challenging, but if it's a planned appointment...make sure you have the parts to do the work before the appointment arrives!

You're right, though, that dealers now expect to have your truck for the whole day for anything other than a standard oil change. They've stopped scheduling at hour granularity and are now scheduling at day granularity. Drop it off in the morning and they'll let you know when it's ready, but could be as late as closing.

2.5 weeks since the first trip to the dealer, 7.5 weeks since the winch failed.

Just called my service advisor and apparently the service manager is involved now. They're still fighting with Ford saying they shouldn't need to bring me back in just to take the winch out and tear it apart, then bring me in a second time for the install. Ford is still saying they need to.

My thoughts on the dealer right now:
  • Service advisor needs to be more proactive about getting me updates. Both times I've received updates it's because I've called him. And I'm doing that once per week. Not exactly pestering him.
  • Speculation: I think the dealer screwed up in their initial diagnosis by not removing the winch and they're essentially asking Ford to help them out on this one. Now, it's quite possible the requirement of having to tear the winch down is dumb and pointless, but as a dealer they should know the rules.
Thoughts on Ford:
  • Do what's right for the customer and stop pushing back on something as dumb as this. If the dealer screwed up, don't punish the customer for it. I paid $3000 (plus tax!) for a winch specifically to have in winter for SAR missions. It's winter. There's SAR missions. The winch is currently front-end ballast.
Debating offering to bring my truck in for the two trips. I'm currently in a position that it's not a huge deal for me to come back in on 2 separate days, though I'm guessing the dealer also wants to avoid the duplicated shop time/labor.

I'm shocked My dealer you could drop off no notice and other than work further than maintenance it would for sure get done in a few days if no parts required to order. It's called Ford Quicklane so I assumed it was at all Ford dealers.
It's not. None at any dealer in my area. 4 weeks for an oil change appointment. Absurd.

Ok, update on things. Dealer relented and I'm doing two trips back to the dealer: one to have them remove the winch entirely and give me my truck back without it, then again to install the new winch.

Ford wants them to take the winch off and root cause the problem.

Truck goes back in on Tuesday next week, so next update will probably happen then.

I think this is helpful - right? Ford is making them dig in? Maybe you get to be the R&D guy for the recall we will all have. :sneaky:

Seems ludicrous. Who cares who pays for what? I’ve never known car dealers, especially if the dealership was passed down to them and then on to their kids having to get in line at a good bank. If the dealer screwed up your install they should make it right. I doubt they’ll go hungry.

Meh? It is what it is. I still think the dealer messed up the first when they had my truck for 6 hours (some of that consumed by doing the wiper arm recall) and didn't remove the winch. Fine if Ford wants them to root cause it, but now I'm forced to go in 3 times total rather than 2.

Oh ya so far there's been no question whether or not this is a warranty thing. Cash-wise this is covered. The problem is even if I'm not paying with my wallet, I'm still paying with time. Quite a lot of it. But of course that's not really part of the math for Ford/the dealer.
