The factory upper overload springs have bothered me for a while. They are completely useless.
It takes 3+ inches of sag before they engage, which means when I load my NL 8-11 camper, they barely engage.

To fix this sumosprings, timbrens, airbags and other stuff was invented, but they still leave the overload spring as useless.
Torklift has stableloads & superspring has super swaystops SSS-3. This was a step in the right direction.
Make the overload springs do the work they were intended for.
But neither of these are really easily removable and both affect unloaded ride quality.

So my goal was to come up with something that was very easy to install/remove.
And uses the overload spring to carry weight and do some work.
I came up with many different ideas. Some too expensive, some to hard to fabricate, some to heavy/bulky.
Anyway, I finally came up with something I figured would work. So here are my blocks from my garage of WTF Designs. :ROFLMAO:

And finally here's a pic of them on the truck.
To install, you just slip them over the end of the spring and tighten 2 nuts.
To remove, just loosen the nuts and slide off the spring. Total install time for all 4 is <10 minutes.
They are 2 inches high so they will engage a lot sooner than before.
Best part is I had all the materials on hand including nuts/bolts, so total cost for this was $0. Just some labor.
Final real test will be in a week or 2. I've got a camping weekend planned. I'll report back on how they work/feel.

That is some serious ingenuity! Always love seeing what another 7.3 gas guy cooks up in the garage. "WTF Designs" definitely knocked it out of the park, and you absolutely cannot beat a $0 price tag for custom suspension work. The progression from raw steel to the clean welds in 25846.webp is super impressive, and it looks like it sits perfectly in that final installed shot in 25849.webp.

A couple of questions for you: Do you notice any metal-on-metal clunking if you hit a big bump while unloaded, or does the clearance keep it quiet? Also, have you thought about capping the ends of the square tubing to keep water and mud out, or maybe adding a rubber pad to the top for noise reduction when it engages?

Can't wait to hear how it handles the NL camper on the test run!
 
Creative work and nice idea! Ive had similar concept before and my alternative plan was a taller block on top of the main leaf pack and below the overload spring. This would require a fresh set of u-bolts, but its a nice opportunity to upgrade to 3/4" diameter. Hope it rides well!
 
That’s a nice fix, I like that it’s removable! I think I saw that S&B makes a drop piece to lower the frame outrigger closer to the overload spring, but that’s meant to stay in place.
 
Never understood why other upper stableloads always use rubber. I like how you used the factory rubber pad and just closed the gap with steel. Looking forward to hearing about their performance.

Look, when you're dealing with heavy loads and a sagging rear end, you’ve always gotta use protection! Just trying to help practice safe suspension so you don't get any unexpected metal-on-metal clapping out on the trail 😁.
 
I did this same mod to my 2002 Dodge/Cummins 2500 with a heavy slide in camper about 23 years ago. It works very well controlling side to side sway and squat. Wish I still had the pictures, but they were in Photobucket and I no longer have access to them. Nice work OP!
