Comprehensive MPG thread.

"I’m planning to get a DiamondBack HD cover for the bed. Maybe that’ll help a little with fuel economy?"

Having studied aerodynamics I've got some good news and
some bad news. The good news is it probably will. The bad
news is it won't be measurable. The only measurable factor
is your right foot. 😉

Following closely..Gas at $ 1.87 /gal today in South Texas . I am in the shadows of all of the major refiners and fuel is cheap now.
just found this thread today and thought the posts were recent saw this one and before I realized it was 2 years old I had two bags packed ready to move to Texas

Sorry for the late reply! I’m pretty sure you’ll see a MPG increase with the cover. I can’t say for sure because I added a UpTop Overland Alpha rack to my roof along with a 40” Baja Designs light bar that is sitting ‘prouder’ than I want. I installed it at the same time as my DB cover. Still, I’m getting 17.5mpg average. Just took a 2,225 mile road trip from south Texas to Denver and back through the mountains. So, I’m pretty happy. I think that, once I change the light bar to something that will fit behind the custom cut front faring available from UpTop Overland, I’ll get a bit better mileage.

I’m curious what you’ve been getting with just the DB cover?

I have the DB cover and noticed no gain at all. I have checked it a couple of times with cover on/off. It sure makes going through the car wash easier!

There's no way a tonneau is gunna measurably affect mpg below 60-70 mph. That's why small planes don't take off until 70 and they're sporting 30' wings! The only way a tonneau would possibly help is if it was connected to the back edge of the cab. Even at 70 mph any possible benefit is likely negated by the abrupt air flow change at the tailgate. Put a 10' long cone on the back of your tailgate and then you'll see some measurable results!

There are always so many variables to mpg, so I will try to add them all in. If you have some I didn't think of let me know and I will add them. Maybe a moderator can make this a sticky?

Before I hear the "it's an HD truck, expect crappy mileage" comments, I get that and expect it and not complaining about it, I still would like to know though!
I'm not sure about Diesel fuel but for the gasser guys, we are still in the winter blend for fuel and when the summer blend gets here we will be getting probably 2% MPG better! For those that don't know the difference here's a link (Winter/Summer gas Diff). My truck is on order so I can't play yet, but I will!

To try and keep this as a legit apples to apples comparison, I would like to do the following criteria. I know it's a lot, but more data points will cut down the variables. Try to answer as many as you can. If you have to leave some blank that's okay too. I made an empty template at the bottom you can copy and paste into your reply to make it easier for you.

I tried to copy & past my answers, but I need to know where to paste the answer...
I tried to the right of the gasoline... 7.3L but it only gave option to reply if I held down my thumb...
Surely that's not where you put it.
That be like make 25 ne tgreads... one for every answer...
