HOT TAKE incoming from a guy that has lived 10 minutes from that ramp for decades. I've seen a lot of this.
That's the lower ramp. He was almost down and had plenty of room to run in the right lane. There is also a FULL 12-16 foot SHOULDER the whole way into Silverthorne, which is only about 2 more miles.
PANIC RESPONSE. You have 2 options... take the exit, or take the ride.. in the heat of the moment, it's hard to judge... but an experienced driver that knows the road flattens out and then rises again literally just around the next couple corners.... and having a shoulder to lean on (pun intended)
Would never have made that choice.
His carrier will get a HUGE ticket and bill for the emergency services.
Fun fact.... I've seen the aftermath on 2 separate occasions of trucks rolling off the left side of that ramp. It ain't pretty. If not for the new guardrail, this moron would have done the same. You can see it bounce off the rail in the video. I would not exit the lower ramp unless it was a heavy traffic day.
But then again, I'm not a commercial driver...... but I WAS raised by class A drivers. Literally the only one in my immediate family that never got a CDL, aside from my sister. Mom, dad, uncles, brother, cousins.. All CDL holders.
The surface of that particular ramp is pea gravel, over 3 feet deep at the bottom. Hard to even walk across. You gotta kinda crawl. They used to have sand barrels too. But CDOT determined them inhumane or something.
P.S. JAKE BRAKE.
99% come down that hill in control, and 90% of them don't really use the friction brakes doing it.
That guy is an idiot, shouldn't be on the road in a big rig, and is likely in this country illegally.
F* him. Stupidity should be painful. Thank God he didn't hurt anyone else. Fatalities on that section of Interstate are extremely common.
