Calling all 6.0 PS guru's

Subscribed. Just had a lot of experiences with the 6.0 (many involving tow trucks) but they did good when they running. Unlike the 7.3 which the tow truck also meant a rod through the block the engine itself seemed solid.
sucks man, i and many others can try and help. I've had 3 of them (two f250s -04 and 05, and an 05 excursion) everyting from stock to more on the higher hp builds.

Sorry I didn't mean currently, I meant back in they day (spent a lot of time broken down in an '05 in 2005, 2006, 2007) I'm sure the after market/builders have figured out all that stuff (and I was just interested to learn what people are doing.) Major failures we had were HPOP, fan clutch, alternator, IC hose clamps, EGR cooler, etc. All the common stuff that unfortunately puts you on the side of the road. All warranty, Ford was generally helpful. Was funny to drop a 16k lb trailer from behind a dually and pick it up with my Avalanche 2500 and tow from Denver to Moab and back. You want to talk about some slow hill climbs. :ROFLMAO: I almost had to go into 4 Low for Vail pass on the way back.

I am impressed by the information on the alternator and starter, I had no idea how undersized the alternator was.

Well we did put a Taurus fan in a K-30 with a 454 back in the day, and my brother ran the same fan with a 383 Vortec SBC he built for an S10, so they had some good parts! But that is insane on something with the draw of diesel truck with glow plugs. No wonder the batteries were always dead in the 6.0, I think the dealer replaced them several times over the years under warranty.

There’s a lot to learn and with this engine being older now, some folks have become true experts on it.

As mentioned, the engine and body are quickly becoming sought-after classics.

JT may have to correct me, but I believe the stock alternator only puts out 110 amps, which is quite small for diesel requirements.

Dead batteries is no lie; I remember going through them every few years—sometimes it felt like months—and years (more like decades later) I’m beginning to understand why.

The problem with the 6.0 back then was that mechanics would simply remove and replace parts, while engine builders actually study the functions and determine what works best for the application. What's the weakness and what's causing it to fail?

We’re seeing much more of that now and I no longer go to mechanics for such work, since I can generally handle parts replacement myself.

Once I have some time to dive into this issue, I’ll likely have more questions, but for now it’s all about learning from those with prior experience.

Yeah a lot of people are stepping up and really starting to push what most would consider a dead platform at over 20yo in most cases. Some really new and cool shit coming out for them. Makes me miss that Chewbacca roar!

Correct on alternator, max rating is 110 and probably something like 60-80 at idle. So absolutely getting crushed at key on engine off and first 3 minutes of startup and idling. It really is no wonder why once you know this why so many batteries, ficm, and injector issues come about so frequently with them; all due to voltage issues. Especially during winter.

She's not going anywhere any time soon.

Here she is with 200 cinder blocks in the bed, notice the small squat, otherwise, she's taking it like a big girl
