Hey all! I am looking at grabbing a tow and stow B&W three ball hitch for the truck, and I see they are on Amazon. I also hear there are some counterfeit parts on Amazon - has anyone bought one from Amazon? Was it all good?
I'm late to the party here but I'll throw in my two cents.
I never,
NEVER, buy things from Amazon that could result in injury from failure. Tools, jacks, jack stands, nothing.
Amazon used to be incredible because of it's review system. But now that review system has been twisted with it's partner program to create the ultimate system to slip through fake junk. And China has really taken to marketing their fakes as the real thing. Used to be it was obvious things were fake and you just didn't care -- but now they try to sell it as real, at the actual real retail prices.
And some of these things they are so close you can't tell. I remember, a few years ago, I was at a conference where a golf club manufacturer (I forget who, I think maybe Callaway) was explaining that they get these fake Chinese clubs in by the thousands every year -- and they're so good at faking them now that they have to cut the heads open to be able to tell.
Similar issues are abound in the firearms world. Thinking of buying any hardware that's $500+? You'll be risking getting a knock-off no matter where you buy it. Leupold, for example, makes a unique serial number for each optic and the only hope you've got is hitting them up to validate the optic they're selling matches the serial number that's on it --- sometimes it will match but Leupold will tell you it's a known knock-off (meaning they make a thousand fake optics with the same serial).
Same thing with all the other major manufacturers. Difference is in quality. I can take my $3k Leupold scope and throw it off a building while attached to my 11lb rifle and it will hold zero. The knockoffs will just break, bend tubes, etc. Maybe you've got an aimpoint that would survive a house fire and still work -- turns out it's a knockoff that breaks because it got too hot in the sun light, or the battery runs dead in a day instead of 5 years, etc.
Well, now imagine that kind of unexpected failure attached to 10k lbs + of rolling weight right behind the vehicle your family is in.
Some shit you just don't cheap out on. Buy once, cry once.
edit- I should specify this applies specifically to buying from anyone OTHER than Amazon, on Amazon. A big part of that is liability. Anyone can get fake junk unknowingly, but on something that could risk injury you want someone who's worth suing if they do sell you a fake.
