so is the front hub lock option pointless ? I see most aftermarket wheels block off access to the front hub , would there ever be a time that you would need to manually lock them in ?

Manual locking would happen when there's ZERO possible movement forward. ESOF works better when the truck can move forward as the splines can align thus locking the hub to axle.

So wheel spin counts right ?

You just need the manual option if the vacuum system fails to lock them. Those covers come off really easy with a couple Allen screws which is better than what a lot of people do that put a closed push through center cap on that you have to remove the wheel to access the hub.

Ok that works , yea I had a set of XD wheels a while back and there was no option other than a hole saw if you needed to access front hubs

Those wheels are run by a few guys on here, but most run without the covers. I think it looks better that way anyway and then you have full function for the truck

To build on @Jackjam, a big part of the reason an F-150 doesn’t have a manual override for the hubs is the system fails with the hubs locked. Vacuum unlocks the hubs. With the Super Duty, it’s the opposite. The hubs are unlocked by default and vacuum locks them.

To avoid people being stranded, a manual override is provided should the automated (vacuum) system fail.

Another benefit of the manual hubs is reduced 4x4 engagement time. If you know you’ll be in and out of 4x4 multiple times in short succession, having the hubs already engaged makes that process faster and with less wear and tear.

Lastly, if you’re going into a situation where losing 4WD in the middle would leave you stranded or otherwise cause problems, manually locking the hubs guarantees, barring a complete hub failure, that you won’t lose 4WD unexpectedly.

Whether any of those things are critical issues is up to you. For me they are, but for lots of folks they aren’t.

Even with auto hubs, I removed the lid off the center hub cover on my Method rims to have access to the axle hub after I learned one day how easily those vacumm lines can come disconnected. This made me simply lock the auto hubs in afterwards everytime (auto hubs are simply trash anyway).

I now have Warn manual hubs so access is detrimental but cannont stand the look of a rim without the center cap on. It looks like a person with missing teeth in my opinion.

I do love the style and look of those rims but I would like them with the center cap on if only there was a way to still have access to the axle hub somehow.
