My apologies if this is a dumb question... Looks like the kit is now available for the Warn/Ford winch that I can install in my 2020 Tremor with 6.7L. Problem is my Tremor has the 240 alternator and the link below says you need the 397.

Is it possible to change my 240 alternator for a factor 397 so the Warn/Ford winch can be installed into the factory bumper?

I also have a factory 240A. If you look in the engine bay, there is a hole where the 2nd 157A alternator should go.

I asked a couple dealers about the possibility of adding a 157A alternator in the hole, to upgrade to 397A, how much it would cost and if there are any other considerations, such as does the wiring harness support it, or does it require any programming. They basically all looked at me like I was crazy and said they’d get back to me (never heard anything). Has anyone heard any better info from a dealer?

So now i’m thinking about getting a diesel shop to put one of these in the secondary location:

Any thoughts on DC Power vs Mechman vs ____?

I just talked to my parts guy at the Ford Dealership and he said the kit is still not available. The only way to currently get one is to order it with the truck.

I bought off a lot thinking I could add a winch when they come out. Thankfully I have a dual battery but I did not know about the 397A prerequisite for the winch at the time.

I’m not sure if this answers your question but I have owned many vehicles with a winch and they have all had a single battery set up. I to am in the same situation. I bought a Tremmor off of the lot that had absolutely everything I wanted sans the dual battery set up.

I’m still going to get the winch installed. In my very humble opinion, I think we will be fine as long as the truck is running when we’re operating the winch or you’re running it for short durations.

Here's the short story on this.... you can run this or any winch on your setup.... However if you ever find yourself in a crappy situation and need to do extended winching... your single battery and single alternator are not ideal to handle the work but will most likely suffice outside of the worst situations. Essentially you'll find your power reserves will take a big hit more quickly and the single alternator won't be able to recover your battery fast enough to make up for the power reserve loss.

Remember winches at full duty cycle will require more amps than your alternators can provide so your battery energy reserve takes a massive hit to compensate. A winch will still even out draw what a dual alternator setup can provide but the difference is in energy reserves. Your single battery will have half the energy reserve capacity as a dual battery setup.

Another thing to consider, some batteries (and I'm pretty sure Ford's stock batteries fall in to this category) don't ever fully recover from from deep discharging loads like what winches can do. For example, if while winching you run your batteries down to the point where your lights start dimming in the cab and essentially start "browning out" your truck", it's very likely that your battery is irreparably damaged and won't ever allow a 100% charge cycle again. Our Ford Batteries offer enough crank amps to wake up our trucks on a cold morning however our starters only draw high loads over a short duration. Winches on the other hand draw high loads during long durations.

Some batteries are better suited to recover from winch loads and Ford's batteries are not them, they're just traditional all purpose flooded batteries. At some point though you may want to replace your standard single battery with something more up to the task.

One thing to remember is you won't always be winching a load. You may winch 50-60 ft then you unhook, release the clutch and you go hook to another anchor which takes time to setup and then you may winch again. It's not like you are winching loaded 100% of the time, far from it. There's always exceptions but I'm guessing most Tremor winches will only be for show 99.9% of the time.

Can the 240A alternator be swapped out for the 332A alternator? That would probably be the next best thing, if it's not possible to fit the 2nd 157A alternator.

Nevermind, the 332A is not a single alternator either, 332 is a 175 + 157 combo.

This will get you close

I’m wondering if the dealership will even be willing to install the winch without the dual battery set up???

I wonder if one can swap the 154 Amp with this alternator on a 7.5l?

I have too have the factory 240A alternator. I went to my local dealer to have them put in the winch and I was told that it required the dual alternators. They have ordered the parts required to add it including additional pulleys, serpentine belt, and a different water pump, along with the winch. They seem confident in their ability to properly install all that stuff. I decided to move ahead with it. Waiting now for the parts to arrive. We will see how it goes.

How much did they quote you?

Sounds like roughly 1000 upgrade if dealer does that. I’m surprised they only put 240amp on our trucks that have dual batteries and upfitter switches. I would have gladly paid the 115 difference new

another option is a single 370 mechman upgrade. you need to upgrade and put some 2/0 welding cable for the run to battery power and ground.
