Was hoping to figure out what this was and if it was necessary (ok to remove)? Black plate on the bed and paint matched plate on the tailgate. Looks like some sort of guide plate for the tailgate. I ordered a 60" tailgate light bar and then saw this afterward. Wasn't sure of its purpose and if anyone had removed before. If not recommended, I can go down the DRW stock light bar path.

You're taking right side of tailgate/bed gap area? I do believe that is a part of the "dont steal my tailgate while it is closed" anti theft lock doohickey.

PS: Also there is a thread on here for the DRW bar with a youtube video link from a Ford tech installing that bar.

Thank you, that’s what I figured. I’ve watched and found a retailer selling the light and plug and play harness. Was hoping to use a full light bar at less than. Half the price though ;-) I didn’t realize tailgate theft was a thing, haha

Yeah for about the last 10 years SD tailgates been a high theft item, especially in Southern Calif. Replacement costs can get up to $4-5k with OEM parts, painting and such. GL with completing your mod!
