Ok so this is my 2nd trip out to Cape Lookout on the NC outer banks.. I talked about my first trip out there with my tremor in another thread and expounded a bit about my experience with sand/snow mode and I can speak a little bit more about what I found out this time and what seemed to work best..
So last time I went I kept the truck in drive and in snow/sand mode and the truck seemed to constantly hunt between 2nd and 3rd gear in 4hi, this is mostly in deeper sand with stock tires all aired down to 30 psi.
This time I still aired down to 30 psi (i was very heavily loaded with supplies for 6 people) and put it in 4hi - sand mode but I kept it in manual mode a bit more, did mixed driving in deep sand and the hard pack closer to the water line. I think the truck did the best locked in 3rd with enough torque that it could keep moving in the sand around 25mph even when lugging a bit in the deeper areas; however, in manual mode I did notice traction control step in a bit more than drive and i had to disable it completely.. also in the deep stuff when we were running a bit too fast (28-30 mph) trailer sway control stepped in and cut power completely. Since I was worried about getting stuck I had to shift to neutral quickly and then back to drive..
Also tried out 2hi with the locker engaged and had no trouble when moving at speed but struggled getting going from stopped.. airing down to 20 psi or so would have helped that probably.
Anyways wanted to report a little bit about my experience and if anyone has any questions about sand driving I’ve done basically most you can do and tested most modes so far so ask away.

cheers - Jimmy

I did try normal with and without single button traction control, but it would upshift too much to like 5th gear and then have to downshift all the way to 2nd and was a bit jerky due to the need for increased throttle input. Also traction control would kick on so that was quickly disabled. I don’t think I tried the double traction button for the sport mode advancetrac on this trip due to changing over to sand mode fairly quickly after the first couple times my truck had to downshift too many shifts.

I’m not too sure about the trailer sway, I’ll have to check the manual. I do feel like it kicked in when I was in sand mode- manual shifting with an extra button push of the traction control button although we were booking it running late to get to the ferry so I was more paying attention to my speed and surroundings to stay sadethan anything, which is why I was driving a little too fast when it kicked on.

One other note that can help immensely when loading up the ferry was to put the truck in 4lo - it helped to creep up to only a few inches to the vehicle in front with more control than two footing the gas/break

Now for the big question...Did you catch anything? Folks heading that way in the next few weeks wanna know.
Mostly sea mullet (whiting), some croaker, a few grey trout(weakfish) one Spanish on a spoon and had some small red fish that weren’t quite big enough, no bluefish or pompano which was odd but temperatures had dropped since the week before.. sand fleas were definitely what we had the best luck with for bait but they were hard to come by that weekend for some reason, oh and some hogfish and pin fish on the inland side

Nice report- Heading down to Harker's this afternoon for some inshore fishing this weekend. When i was driving up at Ocracoke in April, i put it in sand mode, traction off, and used the off-raod cruise control in all types of sand. It worked great, and seemed to stay in 3rd gear 99% of the time. I didn't let any air out either.

Sounds about right for this time of year...weather is great, family loves going early June, surf fishing not so much...I will be pitching the yak in the sound and getting my daily limit of sea trout.
