My guess is they won’t total it. Way too much value left in the truck. I hope your right but I think they would try to restretch a frame before totaling it out.
On my 2019 f150 they wouldn’t allow any straightening or stretching- something about weakening it. Total repair was north of 40k but still not enough to total the truck.

I work at a niche insurance company - if OP puts his foot down hard enough and can supply his SOC (shop of choice) estimate showing truck is truly a TL they really don’t have a choice. So my recommendation to OP is go shop some estimates around and make your point to the shops that you really don’t want this thing repaired. Supplements are 100% guaranteed on this and will affect wether it’s repairable vs TL.

If the frame is bent and safety becomes the issue then the truck will total out - I have seen $250,000 ferraris get totaled for a door hit

Same, had a claim with an SF90 disabled on side of the road. While opening door, passing vehicle took the door with them. This is a $900K+ vehicle and was TL strictly due to Ferrari not wanting the vehicle back on the road as a future liability.

If they call frame or not, ask/demand they put on frame machine and check specs. Could help ease your mind on pulling with it in the future, not to mention prove it has frame issues if they say no frame.

FWIW a Ford dealer tried to sell me this truck, saying there was a scratch in the bumper. Repair bill ended up being about 20K from what i heard and they "said" the frame was fine. But not sure they are very trustworthy. Either way, glad youre ok and wanted to chime in that your truck will likely not be totaled.

I wouldn’t necessarily hoop and holler with joy too much at the undamaged B&W hitch. It just means that area of crash energy was transferred to the receiver hitch and then likely to the frame.

I’m no physics savant but an argument could be made that a stiff drop hitch hanging down like that potentially increases the likelihood for frame damage in a rear impact. It’s occupying airspace that wouldn’t otherwise be occupied.

Just tie that axel off to the 6x6 in the fence and pull that back with the truck in low front wheel drive. No biggie.

20K.

The Chevy Colorado that rear-ended me ended up stuck on my trailer hitch. Tow truck guys worked on it for about 20 min and couldn’t release it. Finally I said I’d just pull out away from him. They chained him to the tow truck and a little tire smoke later We were free. State trooper just stood there shaking his head. Lol

I’ve had a similar experience!!!

Exactly. That’s why they tell you not to get those front bull/bumper guards that bolt to the frame. Because instead of the bumper taken the brunt of the impact, the bumper guards takes it and transferred it to the frame.

I never thought of that. You and @ICT Tremor make an interesting point. I roll with weighsafe hitch at all times thinking it would protect my rear end in case of a hit. Maybe time to rethink that.

It with minor impact. Say 5mph or under. Will maybe save your bumper

Hopefully homeboy who hit you got an extra spicy face full of airbag.

I believe your reasoning is sound. I commented on the state of the shank purely because of its own durability. When towing a trailer and not being crashed into, I'm going to feel very confident about the craftmanship of my B&W. :)

I believe you might be able to get metallurgy testing done to determine the integrity of the frame, not sure. In airport ground operations we have to re-certify aircraft tow bars once they reach a certain age or if they visibly look damaged. Most major cities have at least one business that will do the metallurgy testing to see if its within spec...just not sure if you can do it with the entire frame attached...tow bars are kinda...well...tow bars.

Glad to hear your safe though!

I wasn’t aiming at any post or poster specifically with my comment.
