I am going to be driving a rental car 9 hours - from Alabama to Indiana - to get this truck, so I'm not going to have another opportunity with a dealer who is motivated to fix anything for me. So, anything you can add to my checklist will be appreciated.
1) Drive up the day prior.
2) Be there when they open.
3) It's your money.....take ALL DAY if need be.
4) Take a LED flashlight if not two....you want BRIGHT light.
5) DO NOT drive it until you are done with your inspection.
6) If you checked it once...you got time to do it a second time around a little later on.
7) If it's raining, that sales person better be right there with you. If not make them pull it inside.
8) Body panels fitment will be a HARD one to decide. If it's close....better to not "fix" it. If there's a significant gap.....yea....that needs to be fixed.
9) Dummy hub : Either it's there or not. Too easy to fix, even if you leave with the truck. Make them give you a "Due Bill" or some term like that. Basically it's saying they "owe you" whatever is outlined. Usually good for floor mats, or items not found but should be there.
10) Before you leave the lot : EVERY button/function needs to be checked as best possible. Lights, panel roof, power steps, flashers, headlights, AC, Heat, seat heaters....etc etc..you get my drift.
11) Test ride : Well here's the worst part....perspective. You don't like something...they say it's normal. Hmmmmmmmmm.....Hard call. DO NOT baby it. Now...don't floor the pedal leaving the lot either. Just get used to how it feels. Then get to a point where you give it the pedal. Drive it like that for a good bit. Get the feel for the real power. Test all functions as you can while driving.
12) Some things may not be "tested" while there (trailer connected etc etc) those you will have to live with.
13) In the end get someone's number locally from the forum if you want a second set of eyes or second opinion. You never know the value to random friendship/brotherhood. Here's a decent way to meet someone from the forum if possible.
14) At the end....walk away for at least 20 minutes before you decide anything. If you walk back and something BOTHERS you so bad....then maybe this isn't the best choice to go with. If you walk back and can feel a little taller in your boots.....drive it home.
Might not be a "check list" but that's my general process. I've walked away from PLENTY of good trucks. Not many of those I second guess to this day.
Good luck!!
