After getting my truck build finished, it was time to buy the new camper for the summer trips we have planned to Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, the Hill Country and northern Texas.

I bought a Grand Design Imagine 3100RD TT, which has an excellent Rear Den for relaxing with family and friends on camping trips. It is a big upgrade from our previous 26' Rockwood with plenty of extra space throughout. We took it for a quick 3 day trip in the Texas Hill Country so we could shake out the quirks of a new TT while staying fairly close to home. The Tremor 6.7L pulled it beautifully through the rolling hills with the Carli 2.5" Backcountry, Rear Add-A-Packs, Air Lift Airbags and Blue Ox WDH. The suspension and tires were excellent and I was able to tweak the airbags to my liking while moving down the road using the Airlift Wireless Controller.

The 3100RD is 36' ft long and has a dry weight of 7800 lbs and 800 TW when empty. Fully loaded, it will weigh 9000-9500 lbs with a TW of 1200-1400 lbs. (based on how it is packed, etc.) I will be carrying anywhere from 400-600 lbs in the bed and the usual items in the cab. (Wife and I, plus a small dog)

Here is the Blue Ox WDH with 1500 lb Spring Bars: (After this pic, I lowered it down to the lowest setting on the shaft to level the camper)

Here is the stance of my truck when empty with 5 lbs in the airbags: (1.5" Rake in back)

Here is the stance with the 1500 lb Blue Ox Spring Bars and 25 lbs in the Airlift air bags. The truck is sitting about a 3/4" high in the rear. I might go a little higher with the pressure in the airbags for the next trip because I will be carrying my two e-bikes in the bed, along with the other items.

The awesome Rear Den with a 50" TV and 48" electric fireplace for those days when it is raining and you need a place to relax!

Queen bed? Grand design makes great rigs. Had a 315 rlts

Man your truck looks great. I really like that camper layout too. I was looking at a North Trail 33RETS when we were thinking TT and it was very similar. You all will have a great summer with that rig!

I can’t wait to see the pics. Those are some epic destinations!

Yes, it has the queen bed. We also looked at the 315 RLTS with the king slide and walk-in closet in the bedroom, but we really wanted the rear den with the two couches, captain chairs and 50” TV.

It rained most of the day on Saturday and we had six of us in there watching the big screen, reading, playing games and eating with no problems. My daughter rented a cabin for sleeping with her family, but everyone liked the camper better on the soggy day.

So far the GD has been a great upgrade from the Rockwood Mini Lite we had previously. We could barely fit four of us in the Rockwood at the same time...

Quick question. With your trailer hooked up, are you able to lower the tailgate?

No, the Grand Design has a shorter nose between the power lift and the coupler, so even with the Blue Ox WDH, it hits by about a 1/2”. On the Rockwood, I could open the tailgate with a 1/2“ to spare.

I heard you can rotate that control head 90 degrees. That might give you enough room to use your tailgate.

Great looking setup for sure... I'm just starting to look at new campers an was wondering how much does that model run if you dont mind me asking?

Grand Design 3100 RD

I got mine with all of the available options:
Peace of Mind Package
Ultimate Power Package
Artic 4-Seasons Package
50-Amp Service
Second AC
Free Standing Table and Chairs.
Fireplace

List price was $49K with Freight, and I paid $36.5K, plus TTL. (26% discount) For COVID times, this was the best deal I could find in Texas or the surrounding states. We looked at several, and they were all sold within a week. This one came into the dealer on a Friday and we bought it the next day before it was even in his inventory, as my wife had called asking about the exact model.

That would be awesome! The tailgate barely hits the two buttons on the front edge, so if I twist the whole unit to the left or right, it should open... Thanks for the suggestion!

That is why I love this forum! (y)

Great looking setup TX! My wife and I have been looking at the exact same model. Love that rear area. Mind if I ask which dealer you went through?
Hope your three day trip went smooth and there weren’t too many quirks to work through! These grand design units seem to be pretty well built.

I bought mine through Crestview RV in Buda TX. Ask for Mark.

We had a few minor issues they are addressing now, but I should have it back in the next couple of weeks.

I've just listed my Lance Camper For Sale. We're leaning hard towards a new Travel Trailer. Now isn't the time to buy. They're asking full retail, and you have to wait for it. Thats ok, I can wait. Here in Tampa the "Big" Rv show is in late January. If theres a deal to be had at that time, I may bite. Out Doors RV Travel Trailers make a couple models we like.

Not sure how far you are willing to drive, but I found most Texas RV dealers are still offering 15-25% off of MSRP.
