It can not be added later without changing out the transmission. I got it to add an on board generator/welder. There are other uses. Most common is for hydraulic pump for commercial accessories. An electric air compressor would be more practical. Even if I don't put it to use it's a pretty cheap add on just in case or for resale. Most would never use it for a personal truck.

Ok yes I didn’t think I would need it. but very inexpensive add on and could be useful one day. Thanks for the reply I have had trouble finding info on this matter.

I need to study up on this. My truck was purchased from dealer inventory and come with the PTO.

Adding a compressor or generator sounds extremely interesting.

BTW it added $5 to my monthly payment. I'm good with it.

RealPower in Indianapolis makes several models for this size truck. Not sure how well they fit with our factory fuel tank arrangement but anything is possible.

The research I’ve done shows PTO systems to be very expensive (around $7K for a PTO air compressor), but it’s tough to get numbers without reaching out to these companies. Since they predominantly work with commercial customers and custom applications, you have to reach out for a quote rather than a price just being listed.

I haven’t gone to the effort of asking for a quote yet.

Worth noting the PTO air compressor was on the order of 70 CFM, so dramatically more airflow than a 12 volt compressor, but also a dramatically higher price to go with it.

Agree. Either an air compressor or generator would be extreme duty and output for most needs. But if one intended to work out of the truck it would be a great way to go. I like the generator option as I can run about anything off electricity, including an air compressor, welder and heavy duty power tools. I kind of like the idea of being able to do on site welding and fabrication myself.

My F450 has the PTO option. I believe it's most common purpose is for a Hydraulic Winch or Dump Bed.

Yes it does. I will probably never use it. But for $250 it seems like a good add and possibly use in the future.

Oh wow that’s quite a bit. It seemed more like for commercial use. But it’s a very cool idea and maybe going forward more options (Less expensive) will be made for it.

Here is a video of a company that makes custom PTO generators. It looks like you have to call for a quote from them because they offer many sizes and many different output panels. But, this is a good solution to run a Truck Camper or even your entire home!!

Yes very cool. Thanks for the info!

I added the PTO option to my build as well. If any of you find a company to install a Generator please keep us posted. Since the 2021 F-150 has the onboard power option I thought someone would come up with a solution for trucks.

PTO is a physical connection to the transmission. There is a port/window on the side of the transmission that can be removed and a geared device can be installed. It only operates when the vehicle is in neutral (don’t quote me on that part).

Is it connected to an upfitter switch??
It can be. Also you can install a variable potentiometer on the idle control circuit to step up the idle to the preferred speed.

Kind of like the onboard generator on the new F150. They have smaller sizes for more practical uses.
