Hey, y'all,

6.7L Diesel engine. It's been bitterly cold here and I've been starting my truck remotely or leaving it running when I run in to get coffee. It is automatically going into high idle (~1200 rpm) because it is so cold. I do NOT have the high idle mod installed or turned on. High idle is great. It gets the engine warm and warms up the interior, but I also notice a heavy diesel smell (or diesel exhaust smell) in the cab when I get in. I've never smelled it before. And when it normally warms up WITHOUT high idle, I never smell it. It only smells during the high idle.

I'll ask the dealer next time I take it in for an oil change, but I'm baffled on what could be causing it. Any ideas?

Adam

I have experienced the same thing. Not sure why the smell comes through only at high ideal. If you get an explanation please let us know.

It it going into a regen cycle during the high idle? I.e., since it's only hitting high idle 'sometimes'.

No. It's hitting high idle because it was -23F here! Engine needs to ramp up to match the weather.

I would try putting a hand held carbon monoxide detector in the cab my 2019 developed a hole in the Y pipe at the firewall it would come into the cab Real bad when parked while moving the vents would blow it out this is the one we got I think Walmart sells them

Out of curiosity, did you get the diesel supplemental heater? I wonder if there is a difference on the high idling.

If its high idling the DEF is probably frozen from sitting over night - perfectly normal. Once you hit the remote start (or start it any way you are able - key, Ford Pass, push button, etc.) the truck turns on the heater in the DEF system to thaw it back out. On a cold morning your truck isn't injecting DEF into the exhaust which is what gives it the usual sweet DEF/Diesel exhaust smell you are used to from warm weather idling. On a cold morning start you get the good old fashion diesel exhaust smell until the DEF system thaws itself back out and can begin running normally. At least this is how my 17' has been running for the past 75,000 miles or so.

I agree! My 17 Diesel Discovery smells old school when she first fires up for about 10 seconds then she starts to smell sweet again when the DEF starts flowing. It gets parked in the garage so you smell it when you're backing out and by the end of the driveway it smells sweet. I always remote start so not sure about the Tremor. Anytime I smell something I think it's a regen or burning some of the "new" off (2300 miles).

Diesel exhaust the smell of power and victory! ????????
