Short version of story:

* When I picked up the truck, the dealer said Washington State was showing RTA tax would be charged (but did not charge me) since he said this was an error and would probably be worked out before I got the plates.

* Poking around on the DOL website (https://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/rta.html) shows that RTA Tax is not collected for chubby vehicles over 6000 lbs.
* Another section on the website says I will owe the RTA Tax based on my VIN.

QUESTION: Have any other King County Tremor Owners run into this (either at the dealer or when plates came)?

Many thanks for any insight here...

I do not have to pat the RTA, as I live across the Narrows bridge, but I ran my vin from my old address and it showed my RTA tax would be $717 per year! crazy

Sad!!! Taxation Without Representation!!!

I've run in to being charged and then refunded on a regular car, because I live less than half a mile outside RTA (east side of Redmond) - thank god. Now I know to tell dealers that I am not in RTA before I pay. Dealers can tell but they have to look carefully at your address - not just a zip code. But looks like you are right about heavy trucks not having to pay.

For me it was part of my initial registration. The dealer knew about it and told me up front. RTA tax is on all vehicles in the mentioned counties. The weight just dictates the price. I live in King Co., purchased in Bellevue. $700+, can’t remember exactly the cost. Gotta love paying for the transit system I never use :)

HI. When you got charged, did you have the opportunity to show the dealer the DOL website which says that the charge does not apply to vehicles weighing 6001 lbs or more? The web link is in my initial post.

Also, as an FYI, I never got charged the RTA Tax on my old F250...

I appreciate everyone providing comments.

Residents of King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties who live within the Sound Transit District(www.soundtransit.org) are required to pay the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) tax upon purchase or renewal of a new or used vehicle. This tax helps fund construction and operation of Sound Transit's regional mass transit services. The current rate of 1.1% has been approved by the voters in the Sound Transit District.

Hi Apparation -

Thanks for digging into this even though you are an out of towner! Anyway, that's the same website I saw earlier. Scroll down a bit and you'll see "Which types of vehicles are subject to the RTA Tax". Then go down further and you will see that passenger trucks 6001 lbs and over are not subject to the tax.

So far, I see one person who was charged (who bought in Bellevue), and some others that were not, but I am not sure if those people live in the RTA District.

Any more comments would be appreciated!

No problem. Another giant tax for a choo choo train that is not needed, and certainly won't be in the future with people working remote. But that's a discussion/debate that should take place at the local tavern, and not here!

Yeah we have money pit trains here. People fear for their lives riding them.
