Hey Guys,

With the truck under a month out now I've been researching tonneau covers and caps. I really should be getting a cap for my uses, but my wife loathes the way they look. I love the functional advantages they provide, but don't love their looks either to be honest. Before anyone says it, I've shown her plenty of pics of the best looking ones on the market already and she didn't budge. So this has led me down the road of a tonneau cover.

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a Diamondback HD at this point. I want the security, weather protection, and toughness it provides. Plus I like that they are local to me hand have outstanding reviews. I do wish the handles and hinges didn't stick out and it opened more like a fold up though. I called and emailed Renegade because I really like their product, but both have been unanswered for about 3-4 weeks and I've read too many issues with excessively long delivery times and difficulty getting ahold of them. Any last minute recommendations or concerns I should know about before ordering a Diamondback?

Thanks in advance!

Nothing really to add in terms of concerns but I've read on here that you can quick order them for an extra $300 and if you pick up the order in person they'll install it for free.

I am ordering one soon, on diamondback website they offer the smooth finish, that’s what I am going with.

So about a year and a half ago I purchased a 2016 power wagon, and quickly put on the diamondback HD cover, with the four wheeler ramps and window protection.

Since I’m about to trade in the truck I sold the cover for pennies on the dollar, but I kept the four wheeler ramps because I knew as soon as I have the money to do it, that I was going to put the diamond back on the Tremor.

I had the four wheeler on the back of the truck a few times, and honestly I got more complements on the cover than I ever did on that truck.

They are pricey but extremely well-made. I loved that Diamondback cover.

honestly I absolutely loved it. Oh and it’s super easy to install so if I can do it you can do it.

So I have an HD. I love it! It's easy enough to take on and off... I have a 5th wheel so it has to come off to tow. I have had it on/off a few times now. Is that a hassle? Sure. About 10-15 minutes to take off and 25-30 to put on. But everything has its compromise.

So you can order it smooth and without the cleats. That's about as clean as it gets.

It's a very well made product, heavy duty in every way and will last a lifetime. If that's the direction you go, you won't be disappointed.

As far as folding up, you can disconnect the shocks from one door and fold it all the way back giving you not quite half the bed open. I've done that a couple of times recently. You could just remove it also. Takes literally 90 seconds. Although, it's pretty heavy.

Good luck with your choice!

You can't do better than DB. Had one on my F150 for 5 years.
I think you can order it without the tie-downs. If you don't want
tie-downs why do you want the HD? If you're not gunna load ATVS on it you're throwing your money away. You and your wife could stand on the SE. BTW, be sure to get the little trays to screw to the underside. They're great for tossing loose stuff in.

I went down this exact same path when I ordered my 2021, wanted a cap to carry more stuff but chose a DB HD in smooth with no cleats. I added some low profile aluminum L-Track which gives me the ability to tie things down, or even mount a rack for canoe/kayaks. I was not sure I would need the HD, but it was not that much more to upgrade. The only issue I have had was user error when I closed the tailgate without the tailgate step fully seated, and it ripped the gasket/seal on the DB. All in all, and now that I have been using it for a couple of months, I would go this route again.

Could you go into more detail on what actually comes off when you take it off?

Just the folding panels or everything including the clamps and trim pieces?

Interested to hear that as well.
Would love to have one of these, but afraid it’ll be too much hassle pulling 5th wheel camper - would like to be able to cover the bed back when we reach whatever destination. About to pull the trigger on a RetraxPRO XR, but I could be convinced otherwise.

I like this idea! Which L track did you go with? Anything you’d add or do different?

I ordered from US Cargo Control: 6' Airline-Style L-Track - Aluminum × 3

Here are a few pics I had on my phone.

The folding panels come off with ease, (front and rear).

The center section is held by traditional c-clamp

So the front and rear hinges just slide out, similar to a traditional door set up.

Hope that helps.

Can the clamps be left on if towing gooseneck/5th wheel?

"Can the clamps be left on if towing gooseneck/5th wheel?"

I strongly doubt it. That is why I got a TT. I travel with stuff that
won't go into a TT/5er pass-thru and I want it secured.

Your best option is a retractable. IMHO none of them offer the
security of a DB but some are better than others.

Well the clamp attaches to the side of the bed to hold the panel down so in my mind I can’t see why you couldn’t leave those intact after the panels come off if towing. However, I just wanted to confirm this with someone who has a DBHD

I have the smooth HD (it is still actually textured just not the diamond plate pattern).

You can take one or both folding panels off really easy and quickly and the center section comes off easy too. I can do it by myself in 10 minutes. OR if you have 2 people, you can loosen the clamps for the center section and take the whole thing off at once.

I doubt that you can leave the center section (about 12" wide) and run a 5th wheel. Would be in the way. It sits centered in your truck bed.

Best bed cover I have ever had by far!

I also have the 8" deep tool box that drops in up front. It rests on your bed rails so you can take it out quickly (by just lifting it out) if you take the cover off.

I had roll up and flip up covers in the past and they all tend to leak just a bit and I have had the roll up's freeze in cold weather (inside the canister where it is stored when rolling up) and was unable to roll up the cover. ZERO leaks with the DB, even in a high pressure car wash.

The DB cover is bomb proof!
