Did a little simple but useful upgrade this weekend. I wanted a flat nonslip spot to put my phone while driving. I don’t always want it tucked away in the charger area. Made a panel that sits on top of the tray in the center console. Used 16g sheet metal and covered it with toolbox drawer liner. Works great. Cut in a notch so I can lift it off to get under there.

One thing I noticed when picking up my 2021, that it did not have two trays in that hole like my 2017 did. The 2017 had a bottom tray that was flat and went over the key fob cutout. This made it so that if you had a big drink, you could remove the top tray and have a nice flat surface with some good depth for a big drink.

My 21 has a little soft pad between the key cutout and insert. Did the 17 have a hard tray?

If you made more I would buy one from you. That's very nice.

It was a good first attempt. Wish I had better metal working tools. The rubber mat is very tacky which is great. I do need to make the cut out a little bigger to make it easier to pull up. Version 2 coming. Not that hard to make. Just took a unibit to cut out the finger hole then used a death wheel to cut out the pattern. Primer. Paint. then glued on the rubber liner material.

hi ryan,

would you please send me the dimensions!?
I would like to build it for myself. Cool idea!
Thanks

I didn't measure. I bought a small sheet of 16g steel. I wanted something thinner but that's all I could find at the moment. Actually I like the thickness now that it's done. I took out the plastic tray and traced the outline on the steel. The plastic tray isn't perfectly straight but it got me in the ballpark. Before cutting out the pattern I took the unibit and drilled the hole in the top right corner. Then cut along the lines with a cut-off wheel. Filed the edges and ground the sides to make them flat. Then just test fit and ground as necessary to make it sit perfectly. I used scissors to cut the pad. Not the best way to do it. I caused rough edges that you can see in the pics. I think I'll use a razor knife the next time. I'm making version 2 tomorrow. maybe I'll post more pics

Hello Ryan,

how silly of me.
That's right, I can take out the plastic tray....

Thanks a lot

Seems like for version 3.0 you should bend a leg on the front end to make the surface sloped. Make it I’m easier to see at a glance while driving.

Not a bad idea
