Camper Shell Options for Super Duty Tremor

I really want to like those Smart Caps but there is something about a color matched that looks better.

I agree, I had painted fiberglass topper for years, never had a problem, ever. I went to a smart cap, it’s great, works just fine, but I can’t stand the look, and the new version looks way worse.

I agree and disagree at the same time. I hated the Smartcaps because of the mismatched color but I have really started to like it for what it is. It’s just different and it has grown on me.

Everytime I am about to pull the trigger on a cap I will use the bed of my truck for well truck things and I’m hauling lumber or appliances or something that I would not be able to do with a shell on the back.

Y'all can get them matched, right?
Not from RSI , I know there was a rumor they would come paint matched. I thought about having mine either wrapped or sprayed. Some people come up and tell me how much they like it… personally the look really hasn’t grown on me.

I think a lot depends on the truck it sits on. Mine is sitting on a glacier gray platinum which means paint-matched bumpers. Wheels are change out to some anthracite rims w/ black rings, so while not being blacked out, there's not a lot of chrome left, and lots of black highlights. It looks really nice on the truck, and I wasn't really keen on the boxy look originally. It's fully functional, which is why I bought it. It's really grown on me. I have the old style, and glad I do. I like it much better than the new one.

My last truck had a steel shell with barn doors, and was paint matched to the truck from the builder. It looked good, as I think a paint matched shell does, But I think I like the original black the smart cap comes in better

I'm really torn with this new Smartcap design. I love the fact the side doors are larger but the removal of the small window means I can't see an easy way to pipe in a diesel heater and I would need to make insect screens to cover the whole side windows when vented. Lack of availability of the old model is pushing me toward a Chinesium version.

Am I missing something?

I had to see this for myself. I wonder why RSI would remove that, especially for those who travel with animals. I haven't had a chance to to see how cold my smartcap gets in the Texas winter yet; but I read (maybe saw on youtube) that if you line it with carpet, you can stay comfortable with just a sleeping bag. The Texas heat is brutal in this metal death trap, so I am curious how hot you will get with a heater if you don't carpet it.

This is me also assuming you're not in a place that drops below 0.

I'm curious as to what you decide and how this works out. As soon as temperature drops here, I will do my first overland venture and test it out. I was thinking about grabbing this one for backup:

Lots of people have been complaining that the small windows break, fall out, open at random times etc. I suspect that the fact they dont have a good solution for it is why they removed it.

I mostly camp up near the Canadian border and skip it mid Summer due to the bugs so heat isn't a problem like Texas.

Winter does get a little challenging. This is my record so far but we were in a drafty non-insulated cabin, not the truck and we had a stove. I think you should be fine down to +10 or so in the back of the truck with a decent sleeping bag and maybe an electric blanket and jackery without a diesel heater. A heater is nicer to heat the whole space though and I want to retain that option.
