7.3L Gas vs. 6.7L diesel

I’m glad this topic isn’t as controversial here as other places I’ve seen it discussed. I’d love to have gotten a diesel. It’s just simply too much maintenance and systems to break. To me the extra torque wasn’t worth that risk. I don’t tow anything that a half ton couldn’t handle but I like the bigger truck. So I’ve always chosen to get the largest gas engine I could. My 08 super duty had the V10. I loved that truck and miss it. But my new 24 7.3 is starting to win me over.

The gas vs. diesel topic really turns into a shit show on the other Ford forum I frequent. Along with oil discussions.
There's no real reason for it. I buy what suits my needs. I don't need to defend it, promote my choice to others or tell others what they should or should not do with their truck buying dollars.

I see people listing 18-19 mpg fir the diesel. Does anyone get that? I’m in Montana and best I can get is 16 maybe 16.2 on a tank. Overall at 20k miles I’m at 14.8. Towing 7-8k I get 10 overall. And first time I hooked the trailer up my def went from 3k miles to the 500 mile warning in about a hundred miles and since a shop got caught deleting them you can’t get it done anymore, haven’t looked to hard recently though. I love the engine and the power but with all the emissions and it being my third diesel and never getting the mileage everyone else seems to get I’m thinking of downgrading to the 7.3
I don't get that, I have when stock on stock setup (wheels and tires) gotten a best of roughly 17.x but regens really kill the mileage. I track with fuelly (in my signature which is basically hand calc'd) and I have adjusted AFE Bias down so my "Lie-o-Meter" is more accurate. If I just cruise at 60-65 I get up in that area but when I'm on the hwy I am rolling at 80 and again my Toyo MTs are heavy as sin

Rockin 13.5 mpg here! But my daily is a Tesla, so zero Fs given

After 2,200 miles my average MPG in my 24’ 7.3 F350 is 11.0 🤣 I was averaging 12.0MPG last week before I took it on a 450 mile tow last weekend. Got 8.1 on that trip hauling 11K pounds at mostly 65-70mph. That definitely hurt the average MPG a bit. I’m gonna leave the fuel economy computer as-is and not reset anything so I can get a good idea of my mileage will improve or not as the engine breaks in more. I don’t drive particularly hard when the truck is empty either. Oh well, I didn’t buy it for MPGs.

I came from a deleted 2014 F250 6.7 Diesel that I had for 9 years/150K miles. Don’t really miss the diesel. If I was hauling >10K every single week I would have 100% bought another diesel. A major consideration of mine is I also try to keep each truck I buy for 8-10 years. That’s a major reason I went with the 7.3. Got tired of wrenching on the 14’ 6.7 as things went past 150K miles. Such a PITA to do anything on that engine. However, the 7.3 will be easy to wrench on down the road. My biggest complaint so far is the fuel range (NOT power) when towing. But I knew that going into it. Buy the right tool for *you* for the job.

That was my one and only issue with the 7.3 Tremor. Range when towing. Which really isn't much of an upgrade as far as the diesel goes. That's why the Transfer Flow 58 gallon aftermarket tank came to be. No more issues! Love it!

For real. The folks are much more friendly and laid back here. Kinda like hanging out in the barn shooting the shit. Not like the board room at the the other forum so dry and often times rude. But hey there’s good and bad in all things.

It's for several reasons (my guess)
  • a lot of the mods here are engaged and quite active.
    • And they really don't give a shit or have time for the bullshit
    • many of them come from other pages that got lax and saw them go to crap
  • most of us are old or older or elder since the "Tremor" is fairly new
    • the smaller group "Tremors" vs rogue Super Duty Page
  • Those that go against the grain quickly get weeded out (see first few bullets)

I like all those aspects. But also the folks here are a different breed. Lots less ego and in fighting. A different culture all around and I know those with the strings do most of That leg work. But the civilians here seem very civil as well.

I’m the same as you. Had a 12 deleted powerstroke I sold with 182k. Now in a 24 tremor 7.3. My powerstroke had a 26 gallon tank and I got 10 mpg pulling my boat. 7.3 has a 34 gallon tank and gets 7 mpg. The range and fuel cost is the same.

A 6.7 with the 10 speed would be a monster towing heavy loads. As you indicated above I’m done with the maintenance cost and potential breakdowns on a 6.7.

The usual question....What would be yours pros and cons and why?
One word... torque.
