Anyone running a 5 Star tune on their 7.3L? I've never had a tune on any vehicle so considering the options. Truck is my daily driver but in the warmer months we pull a 10k 5er on most weeks and some longer trips. Any reviews/data or recommendations appreciated!

Following.

less than impressed with mine. hard down shifts to 8. goofy high idling. I do like the delete of factory skip shift tho
Bummed to hear that but I appreciate the data 🤙🏽

If you're interested at all in alternatives, check out Livernois Motor Sports. My previous 2 Fusions had tunes from them and they were awesome.

@TheBeerFather can't get updates for Mac/OS! Man, that is a bummer.

If I do a tune it will likely be Palm Beach Dyno...

Over on the Explorer ST forum the 5 star tunes didnt seem that fantastic, in particular the transmission tunes. I think there were reports of at least 1 or 2 trans that ate themselves on the 5 star trans tune.

I would love to see a guy like ZFG get into tuning the platform, but he is pretty much ecoboost exclusively...

I don't have any type of tune, yet. I'm not necessarily looking for more power, just better pedal response. The Banks Pedal Commander might fill that need. I would definitely trust Banks Power over any other aftermarket Tuner. Gale Banks has been in the Tuning, Power Building business longer than them all.

I have a PBD tune on my GT500, it is magic....

Both my 7.3’s are 5 star tuned with 93 performance tunes. Been running them over a year with no issues. Great power and shifting on mine.

I got the 5 star tuner. Big difference. I know there is so much more HP in there but 5 star gives you a piece of it. The 7.3 motor home tune adds 150 or so. Would like to grab an increase like that but I’ll take 40 or so for now

Love mine. I run the 87 all terrain time daily.

I am unfamiliar with factory skip shift, care to elaborate?
I'm guessing here, and he will have to clarify, but I'm thinking it was what I experiences a couple days ago. I was pulling my, new to me, travel trailer home. On the uphill grades the F250 would shift out of 10 and go straight to 8 (skipping 9). Never did see a 9th gear shift. It seemed ok but perhaps unnecessary as the truck could have made the hill in 9th just fine, but the RPM's weren't too high. I was ok with it.

Out of curiosity was this while cruise control was on? I noticed while towing if I let the truck run in cruise control it would downshift further than necessary on grades. Where as if I downsifted (10th to 9th) just prior to a grade the truck would hold it better and not downshift to 8 or further depending on the grade.

I'm sure it was on cruise some of the times. I'm not sure if it was off a time or two but you make a good point. That may have been the reason. I'll specifically try it with cruise off next time I take it out.

I had a 5 star tune n my 7.3, I returned it. It just didn't shift right. The truck was lurching forward during shifts and 3 times I head a huge bang fom the trans. After that it never shifted right. Woud not recommend.

Interesting, some good and some not so good. I will be seeing them on Thursday and hoping for the best!

I have 3 7.3’s and all are tuned with 5 star. 2 for almost 2 years with zero issues. I only run 93 performance tunes on all three trucks and only put 93 octane in them.

I’m gonna be different, leave it stock. I tow, haul and daly drive my truck, it has never had an issue and performs better than my expectactions. You risk voiding a warranty and whenever you bring the truck back to the dealer for service (if you do) you risk the issue of a reflash screwing up your tuner.

But on the flip side, my 06 ram cummins ran the smarty jr tuner until after I traded it in with 200k on it, never had an issue. The next buyer is still running the truck, it’s pretty much rotted out but the engine is still running problem free according to him.
