I installed the half console vault from E&G into my SD and I can't say enough good things about it. The product is well made, and the install is well thought out. The vault fits perfectly in the console and leaves half the space available for your non-secure stuff. This vault, IMHO, is far superior to the others. First, it is a full box and welded steel construction. Not just the lid, or a lid and some sides, the whole thing is enclosed and steel. Even if you got it out of the truck you would still not be able to open it without some major force. I don't know of any of the others that can claim the same. Second, it fits perfectly. The vault and it's bezel fit in the console without a single problem. Then the factory tray fits on the open side like it is supposed to. Finally, if you install it properly, it aint coming out. 4 bolts go through the vault to secure it to a bracket that you install under the console.
So kudos to the engineers at E&G for making a great product.
All that being said, everything can be improved. This vault is no exception. There are 3 things that would make this vault even better.
1. The combo numbers are upside down. When you are sitting in the drivers seat looking down at the vault the numbers are upside down. This puts the first number of the 3 at the bottom. I think the tumblers could be inverted so they are right side up.
2. The knob is very difficult to grip and rotate. Although the knob has indentations around the outside to make it easier to grip the chrome is very slippery. I 3D printed a handle that fits over the knob in the grooves to make it easier to rotate the knob.
3. The bracket that gets installed under the console has 2 tabs on the front of it that require you to lift the console in order to install the bracket. If you remove the tabs that stick up, then you don't have to lift the console or unbolt the console from the truck. Removing these tabs does not weaken or make the console any less secure it just makes it easier to install.
Just my $.02 recommendations on how to make a great product even better.
