6.7 Long crank/fuel pump noise

8oz of water in the water separator hard starts and that noise point to a fuel fuel pump going. I had less than a spoonful of water in my separator once. That’s over 2 powerstrokes and 350,000 miles. Pull your fuel filter, cut it open and look for metal flakes.

Just to clarify, there were only a few drops of “free” water in the separator.

Here’s what it looked like… have gotten differing opinions on whether this is normal.

Not sure how this relates? I assume your truck currently is not running properly? Do you plan to take it somewhere to be correctly diagnosed?
It potentially tells us whether the buzzing noise is actually related to the starting issues.

I have an appointment at the local dealership but not for a couple of weeks. Trying to determine what, if anything I can/should do in the mean time. Dump the fuel? Change the filters? Drive it, or not? I don’t mind doing some troubleshooting and basic work.

The color of that diesel doesn’t look right. I’m hoping it’s the camera lighting.

The amount of “free” at the bottom is not a big concern.

I have owned my 6.7 Tremor since April 2021, I often drain the water separating filters into a clear glass mug. I have 54K on the odometer. I have NEVER had any water, and have never had ANY debris whatsoever. The sample I am seeing that apparently you collected is like nothing I've ever seen.

I don’t know how it could’ve gotten contaminated with gas. But while I’m waiting to get into the dealership I can pump it out and refill it. I always get my diesel from the same place unless I’m on a long trip.

I looked up what diesel looks like when contaminated with gas and I saw a picture of diesel contaminated with DEF. Kinds looks like you have DEF in you Diesel tank. I wouldn't run the engine at all until you find out what it is. See the video below...

Edited to say that I sure hope I’m wrong here.

Any diesel fuel sample I've pulled looks like clear water with a green tint to it.

@loglat : Don't even try to start that motor again. I'd figure out what's going on with the fuel. If you got some time you can wait for the truck I'll be back that way (early October). Dropping the tank, swapping fuel filters is a minimum that needs to done. Given it's possible that there's contaminated fuel up into the HPFP having to go deeper is going to cost you some money.

I'm wondering if there was someone that decided to pour DEF in the wrong fill port.

I agree with Lunch and others that your sample does not look right. I drain some out of the water separator every 2 or 3 fill ups and mine has always been crystal clear yellow and have never seen any water droplets.

If the diesel has DEF the cp4 is toast. If it’s gas the pump might be ok.

Edit - based on a quick search that lemonade sample looks just like def contamination.

Me too. Looks like he's in the Florida panhandle and is a paramedic. May have been affected by the hurricane. Hope you're ok out there @loglat .

Thanks :) All good here.

I pumped out ALL the fuel (ouch), put in new filters, fresh diesel (w/additive), scanned for codes, checked pressure readings... seems to be fine.

I'm STILL waiting to get into the dealership. I want them to verify there was no permanent damage. Also getting some recall work done, and seeing if they'll clean my AC evaporator.

The body shop still has some things to fix but I'm confident my baby will be like new when its all said and done.

Sigh... I didn't ask for this. Also very lucky at the same time.

Glad you’re doing good and hope everything checks out with your truck.
