5th wheel prep pkg with no 5th wheel?

Going to order soon. So am thinking, should I order the 5th wheel prep if I have no intention of every towing a 5er? Reasoning is that it might add some chassis rigidity to the truck? I am aware that it might add some value should I ever sell. Thoughts?
 
It is going to add some weight but could possibly be used as a extra tiedown point as well.
 
I would get it....its like adding factory A/C after the fact......and it is only 500 bucks on a $70-80K truck!

Good point about the tie down. Weight, eh. It's already sorta heavy...

The extra weight really only comes in to play if you want maximum payload for something like a ovehead camper or other very heavy equipment on the truck.

I was thinking the same thing. Originally I was thinking mostly for possible resale but now, besides all the reasons mentioned so far, I like the idea of not being limited as to what I may want to tow in the future.
 
Also includes the extra 7way plug in the bed. I've used that for non-conventional things like running a cooler or when I had a sled deck I used that for the lights. I think most buying the truck used would also expect it.

This is exactly why I ordered it on mine. I don't have a fifth wheel.

That's good to know about the plug. I never used a 5th wheel before but it makes sense now that I think about it.
 
The plug is 100% worth it. Plus it future proofs you if you ever do end up finding the perfect camper or trailer that's a 5th wheel or gooseneck. Never know what the future holds!
 
Hmm, my dealer advised me not to get it. He said it’s easily added aftermarket, and the plugs in the bed (on the factory hitch prep) constantly fly out and get lost. After reading that everyone expects it, I’m wondering if I should have added it to my order.

Does anyone know if it’s easy to add the plugs in the future whenever one also adds the fifth wheel hitch?

B and w makes install kits for after the fact that are good etrailer.com has them and a lot of videos for install, I installed one in my ram 2500 and it wasn’t terrible but the kit was like 600$ so not only did it cost more but then I had to install. That being said I only use a gooseneck 2 or 3 times a year and could prob get away without using it. I will for sure order it on my truck. The only down side I can see to it is having more holes in the bed floor and/or not a smooth bed surface. You will have the caps that will get messed up after a while. But weight added is minimal, more strength, plug is right there, and can tow what ever you want.

On my ram a dealer told me having the goose hitch can hurt resale as a buyer could think it’s been worked hard. Not sure I buy that, thinking was just another reason for him not to give me a good offer on my truck for trade in. Personally it is something I look for when looking for a truck. If so many people didn’t barrow my trailers they would all be gooseneck. So much easier and better towing!

When shopping it seemed to be split 50/50 weather or not to order the prep by dealers. The ones saying not to get it were offering the B&W for a extra $1200 with box trailer plug installed. Thoes pushing not to ge the factory system were saying the it is not good, week and such. I could not find any factual basis on the net for that statement. The B&W does make nice stuff but if installing that kit you have less 5th wheel options. From what I could find the factory system is made by Reese and one piece under the bed vs multiple pieces bolted together like B&W and doesn’t interfere with shock bolt removal like the B&W. The trucks I looked at without the prep did not come with the in box wiring so had to be added after the fact but was supposedly plug in play. So if you are handy could be added after the fact for less than the dealers are changing but still more than the factory option. I do occasionally pull a goose neck trailer so made more sense to get it from the factory than have to deal with adding it my self. I did opt not to order the Ford GN ball kit since was able to find a much more budget friendly option on eTrailer.
 
I have a 29' bumper pull TT, but don't know what the future will bring. I chose to add the 5th wheel prep kit on my build. Like others have said, its only $500 on a $75k truck and it is there in case I need it.
 
The option should be standard on all SDs. As for tie downs, they are just holes in the floor 5 of them ( one is for a goose neck). The wiring plug inside the bed is a convenient too. With the option you can get a goose neck or 5th wheel hitch anywhere and just drop it in. With minimal adjustments and no bars in the bed when you are not using it. I would think it would make a nice feature for resale.

Exactly. I am also looking at modifying a 5er adapter plate to tie down a ATV easier and possibly a removable transfer tank. Since the prep kit is tied to the frame thinking it will be much stronger than drilling an bolting brackets to the box.
 
I don't know why anyone wouldn't order the 5th wheel package. Have a '13 and '18 F350 LWB 6.7's and both have the factory 5th wheel package. If nothing else just for re-sale.

Just my $.02.
 
I didn't bother since our 32ft camper is only a year old and not planning on selling the truck anytime soon either.
