A generic question about the Tremor's 33" advertised water fording. What specifically is the difference between the Tremor and any other SD other than the increase in ride height. Does anyone know if there is an advertised water fording height for a non-Tremor SD??

Water fording height on a non-Tremor is no deeper than the center of the hubs (whatever that height may be). The reason is the differentials have breathers on them - holes - that allow for pressure changes as they heat up/cool down. These breathers will allow water into the differentials. If you run with watered down gear oil for a while or under heavy load, that will severely damage your differential.

On the Tremor they added extended breathers - hoses - so that they draw in/release air from higher up. Thus, if you submerge the differential, it won't let water in.

(If you ever do get water in your differentials, change the fluid as soon as practical. :))

@ccw thank you, huge insight!! I come from cars much closer to the ground. These breathers, are they something that can be added to a SD or is it just easier to buy a Tremor??

And to add on for the Tremor: I don't know how high up the breathers go and if they're the limiting factor anymore. If they are higher than some other component that's sensitive to water, then that other component would be the new limiting factor (e.g. air intake, computer module, electrical connection not rated for submersion, etc).

No problem! I can't speak to any specific products for the Super Duty differentials, but in general yes breathers can be added aftermarket. It's a common thing for off-roaders to do if they are doing water crossings regularly.

By definition it's easier to buy a Tremor, but if you just want the additional water fording ability those are some expensive breathers. ;) Personally I wouldn't consider the water fording a reason to get the Tremor. It's a nice bonus and doesn't hurt, but I would weigh the front differential, included 35" tires and rock crawl mode far more - depending on your wants. Especially if you consider truly how frequently you will be needing to ford water deeper than the hubs.

Most people almost never need to ford water that deep. (For context, assuming 35" aftermarket tires, that means you can ford 17.5" of water with a non-Tremor.)

Great context on the water fording height. I actually am waiting on 37s" and the Carli kit, i went with no Tremor and the DIY. I'm not too worried about the rock crawl mode. As cool as it sounds, i doubt i will use it. However, i'm still a kid at heart and love to go through water. I'm commited for now!

I noticed your second ride, an SA chasis! An aboslute classic. I spent a lot of time with the Wankels. Second to none when they run.....lol

Awesome! Agreed on rock crawl mode not being that valuable to me personally. I know some folks really want it, but I doubt I'll ever use it other than to try it out for fun. If you find breathers that work with the Super Duty, definitely post up links and photos of the install!

Thanks! It's a ton of fun, though a fixer-upper. The engine runs like a top (after I replaced a clogged up fuel filter), but it back-fires like crazy. Literally every shift. Finally figured out it's an exhaust leak right behind the thermal reactor. Every time I dump the throttle to shift, it sucks a bunch of fresh air into the reactor causing it to go bang. Ditto when I turn off the engine. Actually pulling the exhaust out tomorrow to see how bad it is and what it will take to fix it.

To elaborate on the axle breathers, they are not just for water fording. I run them on my desert truck as well to fight the dust.

Yes they are easy to add aftermarket if you really want them 😁
Huh, never even considered dust but makes sense! Guess everything for water protection helps with dust lol. I know snorkels are super common for off road vehicles in Africa and Australia because of dust.
