2024 Whirring Bearing Sound

My 2024 Tremor is also in the shop for this same thing. They said they cant hear it, but are going to use chassis ears on the axle today. I swear it has gotten louder over the last 500 miles so I have no clue why they cant hear it

Update: they put the truck up in the air and heard horible noise coming from the rear axle. They are going to tear it apart and sent photos and fluid samples to ford. I will be getting a new rear axle out of this.

i wonder if theyre over tightening the pinion or the gear mesh is all wrong. maybe they can send you photos

I’m hearing a whirling noise as of today it seems to get louder when I let off the gas… is that how yours was?
The sound only changed with road speed. Engine speed or throttle input didn’t make the tone of the sound change.

Picked the truck up today and it is fixed. They ended up replacing all the bearings and seals in the rear axle. I see new shims as well, so it looks like they just completely re-setup the whole thing. They said it must have been some kind of contamination that had gotten in the pinion bearing. They never found any metal but could see scoring in the bearing.

It is quiet now and the gear setup seems great. No howling or whining. Only noise is the Duratrac tires.

Fixed the steering wheel pointing to left issue as well. Alignment was checked and was good. I thought he said they took the steering wheel off and put it back on straight. It doesn't sound like that in the writeup though. It says the electronic actuator not aligned with steering gear for wheel centered conditions. Whatever they did it seems perfect now as well. It was pretty far off to the left when I brought it home.
That's a great report and I'm sure adds confidence back into the truck and your dealership as well. It is unnerving to spend so much for something and then find it has what could be a major issue. As they say, everything is fixable, but getting it right so quickly is the best feeling. Thanks for sharing!

Called service department today. Apparently still waiting on parts to arrive. Took the truck in on Jan. 22nd.

My buddy runs the service department at the dealer here and he escalated the truck to VOR to try and get parts in faster. Right now the ETA is 2/29 but he said they wont really know until the parts all ship. Everything inside the axle is getting replaced. I hope they do a good job of cleaning it out before assembling it with the new parts. I have a loaner F-150 and it feels like a crossover SUV

Mine ('23, 17k miles) went into the shop yesterday for rear-end noise and vibration. Sounded like pinion bearing because it would change based on acelerator/driveline angle. We'll see what they find when they tear into it on Monday.

Good luck. I have almost 1k miles on mine since they fixed it and the rear end is still quiet. Can’t say the same for the 10 speed transmission. It is whining pretty noticeably from 3 through 6 now. It seems like everyone says this is normal though due to the straight cut gears on the hydraulic pump.

I forget, is this happening to both gassers and diesel? Or just one or the other?

Mine is gas but I think the rear ends are the same. They said my pinion bearing was scored so it sounds like a defective part to me and not related to engine type.

Yeah, same rear end I think, and I have a 6.7L

Place that has mine is a smaller shop and is also a Kubota dealer as well as a Ford dealer. They're more expensive per hour, but they handle the bigger trucks regularly. If they nail this for me, and it's solid, I might buy a tractor from them (I need one anyways.) But we'll see once it's back. I don't want the possible sale to influce their quality of work in case I need to return for anything else! =)

Shop called, said my backlash was off. No issues for 15k, started vibrations while I was driving, other dealer said they couldn't find it and to try balancing the wheels and getting an alignment. Shortly after, started getting the whine. This shop said they found some orange silicone of some kind in there. I am the original owner and no one (to my knowledge) has messed with it, but now I'm suspecting that maybe the other dealer cracked it open and didn't log it? And why would it be good for 15k+, and start vibrating while I was driving it? And then start whining after other dealer took a look? Correlation is not causation, but does not preclude it either. If the backlash was incorrect from the factory, it would have started making noise immediately.

My concern now is: is the backlash a symptom, and not the cause. Could a pinion bearing change the angle enough so that, yes, it changes the backlash? If it's a symptom and they set it up again without finding a root-cause, it will just come back ...

I've done lots on vehicles, but never messed around in the rear half. Wish I had more experienece there!

Backlash will not change without some other failure. If it really did change that needs to be tracked down. It could be a pinion bearing or a side bearing. If the pinion race was not seated in the factory and later seated, then pinion depth and preload will be off and make noise. I am not saying that is it, but just one example of a possibility. Backlash is the easiest thing for a shop to check, but if it was out of spec, they need to dig deeper and find out why.

If the backlash was OK, but they changed it, that could cause a gear whine. I know that when reusing a ring and pinion, it is often recommended to set the backlash to what it was before, not to a factory spec.

Opened my rear slider today for the first time with no radio and heard a whirring sound from the rear. Harder to hear it with any of the windows open. Sounds like bad gear mesh…. Guess it is my turn to contact the dealer.

Sounds like this

My 2024 f250 7.3 goes back in at 10am tomorrow. Service manager took a ride and said definitely not normal sound. Mine starts above 20mph also. Current mileage is 1200, started hearing something around 7-800 miles.

I was already having a little buyers remorse, and now this.

Lol, mine went back in yesterday. No word yet.

Found on roadside dead, lol

My 2023 went in last week for some minor misc stuff but i have same bearing /whirring noise in the drivetrain below 30mph or so. Dealer checked and said i have. Bad bearing in the rear end. They are going to rebuild with new bearings to start with. Had done it since day one of ownership . Picked up december of 2023. Currently have 3500 miles.

Ford has advised the dealer to add friction modifier and drive it for 1000 miles. Return if noise does not go away. Service manager seems willing to help, says he has to go through fords protocols first.
