2023 Super Duty Rear Axle

So I live in Macomb twp MI. Just filled up next to a guy in a 7.3 tremor. Made some small talk as I’m supposed to take delivery myself this week. Turns out he works in the for axle axle plant (Sterling Heights). Claims the axle change was to meet the improved towing requirements. Said the 11.6” is improved in terms of strength/duty. So, sharing what I was just learned from a guy who works in the axle facility.

Nice -
by chance any update on the "new" 14 bolt front end

2024 KR Tremor with 6.7HO and 11000 GVWR with a sterling axle here. Seems like the 3.55 gears may not have been available for 23 and now they are?

My 2023 KR Tremor F350 w/ 6.7 HO built Oct-23 has the Dana Hybrid M300 11.8 gear running 3.55 gears. Seems that other F350's in my configuration has the Dana Hybrid. Not sure this holds true or not?

'23 with the Dana.

What I don't understand is why Ford is slacking on the rear axle department. From what I've read, both GM and RAM use a 12" ring gear on their high end SRW trucks and they also have 4.25 axle tubes. Ford has beefier components almost everywhere else except on one of the most important ones, the rear axle.

I believe you are correct all 23-24 HOs have the 11.8 in them. I think that's what mine has and Banks website seems to exclude only the 23-24 HO from their diff covers. but I could be wrong.

Cause of all the Ford Super Duty model years exhibiting rear axle failures????
Nah....not sure how your math is adding up to "slacking".

Well they did have an entire recall about collapsing axle tubes. Ford also uses more aggressive torque management than Ram and GM.

All I’m saying is that you would think one of the more important items on the higher rated trucks vs the competition would at least max or exceed them. Why did both GM and Ram deem it necessary when their ratings are lower than Fords?

Maybe they want a smaller ring gear for more ground clearance.. just a thought.

You take one moment in time to weigh the design?? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Do you bake a cake using just eggs?? There's more to truck design than how big the rear diff ring gear is going to be used. There's designs out there that don't even use ring gears. Are they better or worse????? Do rock crawler Jeeps run 12" or larger ring gears/axles as the "basic" rear axle. Nope. So why is that large a ring gear "required"....to beat the competition in a numbers game?? Nope.

We don't need a 12" ring gear.

My thoughts on GM/Dodge : Well not too many auto manufacturers build all their own parts. So they outsource parts already designed for the most part. Hence they enter into contracts holding their design/contractual needs as "their" parts. As an example : If Dodge used a Dana axle with a 12" ring gear, Ford would not be able to have the same axle or design parts for their 12" ring gear axle. Ford would need to source another product line or pay to have "enough" engineering changes made to create their own 12" ring gear axle. That might mean different axle splines, different gear dimensions, different bearing races, etc etc etc. That way no Dodge axle or parts could be "swapped" onto a Ford axle.

Heavy is correct, also the large size does not mean stronger or more functional. The alloys and machining processes used also play a large role.

This is per ford performance group.

MY2023 6.7 Tremors got a Dana rear axle. We think it was a SRW version of the M300 (11.8"). MY24 Tremors with either engine got the Sterling 11.6" axle.

So I’ve re read this thread……. We’ve found out a lot about what this axle is and what it’s been going into.

Do we have any real substantial info on it yet?

Is it in fact a sterling?

What are the ratings and capacities?

Is it actually better?

I have the 16 bolt in my 2023 250 6.7 ho non tremor

My work truck, a 2023 350 6.8 gas has the Dana

Not that I have seen.

It does not look like any other Dana and Ford did announce an 11.6" sterling, so most likely that is what it is.

Great questions.
Is it actually better?
Better than what? All else being equal, it should be better than a Dana M275 but not as good as a Dana M300. I am sure that is is costing Ford less than either or they would not use it.

Yes, not 3.55 gear ratio I am guessing. Probably 3.31 right?

Is that a 3.55? I think for MY23 the axle type depended on the gear ratio. I think that all 3.55s were Dana (maybe M275 or M300), all 4.30s were Sterling. Not sure about other ratios.

Curious if anyone with the new Sterling axel has put on an aftermarket diff cover... I don't think Banks makes one yet and haven't found a compatible one from PPE either.

Not sure if this helps or not, but here is what is on my 22 F-250 tremor. I’m expecting a 350 later this month and am curious what will be on it.

If someone could please explain in layman's terms what exactly I'm looking at, that would be great. I'm about the furthest thing from being a mechanic.

I just spoke with the sales dept at Banks and the person I spoke to said that the would probably never be making a cover for the 11.6 axle. Said they are getting away from making diff covers at this time. Asked why and said not enough market for them.
