I have been tracking how many gallons of DEF I burn in my truck since about 10,000 miles. I am a little over 46k now so I thought I would share some numbers:

The engine is mechanically unmodified aside from a Banks intake. Some interesting things to note:
  • On a volume basis, for every gallon of diesel, 1.6% of a gallon of DEF is burned. This goes up to 5.4% while pulling my camper (my current worst-case)
  • The average DEF economy I am getting is over 1,100 MPG. This will range from about 400 MPG while pulling my camper to 1300 MPG under optimal conditions.
  • If you project out the lifetime of the truck, as it currently sits, I have burned about 40 gallons of DEF total. At $2.99 a gallon, this is about 120 bucks including tax.

Good Info! It would be interesting to use your data for a comparison to a 23/24 truck, since we know they use more DEF.

My 22 seems to use basically no def in winter. I’m at 30k km and have only filled it a half dozen times.

I’m curious of this as well as how it compares to the Cummins and L5P. I have heard the HO Cummins uses a good bit more than the standard engine.

We don’t really get winter in South Louisiana but I am pretty pleased with how little it uses.

I have not tracked my DEF use in my 2022. I have 30,xxx miles about half towing either a 10k toybox or a 16k toybox. I can attest to your results of a significant increase in DEF use when I am towing, versus when I am not towing. It would be interesting to test if DEF use goes up, simply by using the tow/haul mode or if it is 100% correlated to the amount of work the motor is doing.

Id say it’s based on engine load I use my more def on the highway not towing than in town.

I don't use my truck in way that uses much DEF, but when I had read about DEF consumption in the past it was said to be directly related to fuel consumption. More fuel used, more DEF used. The rate most commonly noted was DEF consumption to be around 2-3% of fuel consumed. I'm sure that's a general figure and varies by year and make of vehicle.

I get ~ 7500 miles per def fill, use essentially zero DEF in winter

Seems as I add the most if I wait till I do an oil change. Generally speaking I either add 2.5 gallons, or I add 5 gallons just depends on my mood.

My new ‘24 ate through 75% DEF in 2900 miles over 60 days

Just completed a 2,450 mile trip towing 16,800 lbs. total weight of truck and trailer was 25,600 lbs. - started with DEF full - added 4.5 gallons during trip and returned home with gauge showing 1/4 tank - indicating I used 10.5 gallons of DEF is 2,500 miles - I went through a regen at about 1,900 miles as well. Most DEF I have used in such a short period.

I definitely use more DEF when towing our travel trailer than I do with regular driving. It’s noticeable but not an issue for me, but it does support the idea that the truck uses more under load than not under load. 22 F350 6.7

I've never tracked the DEF usage in my '22. When the gauge shows 3/4 full it will hold a 2.5 gal jug to fill it up. I prefer the same mentality of keeping your diesel tank full for the DEF tank as well.

My 23ho uses around 1.1-1.2 gallons of def per thousand miles. I’ve owned it since last October so I can’t speak to summertime usage. I’ve only towed a total of a couple hundred miles and can’t comment on that part.

Hand calculated fuel mileage since new is 18.2 average.

My 22 shows I get an estimated 4K miles on a full tank of DEF lol. I do spirited driving compared to others I've seen on here and get 13.6 MPG generally.

My '23 came off the lot with a full DEF tank. One more 2.5g jug right now would put it at 98-100%. 3300mi on the truck with about 1k of that being light towing, 2k-6klb so 7.5 gal in 3300 miles. Usage was definitely lower in winter with the colder temps and less towing.
