Just looking at some different opinions/advice on 10 spd transmission as I am at wits ends with it (especially 2020-22 trucks). My truck has been to the dealership a half dozen times in reference to harse down shifting as you slow. It has all upates and recalls that I am aware of. Always the same gears 5, 4, 3 (any combination). When it acts up, it feels like you been bumped from behind. The only common thing I have notice over the last 4 years it only occurs from a cold start up till the transmission reaches about 190 degrees, once it is up to fully operating tempature (over 200 degrees) it's mainly fine or tolerable. Normally I would have traded it in and not dealt with this, however I prefer the styling of this generation and it's paid for.

I am dropping it off again tomorrow to have my dealership look it over again. They said they were going to peform some valve body leak down test to see if it is possibly bad. Just looking to see if anyone else have had this issue, especially if you got it fixed. Mine is a Powerstroke by the way.

That’s a tough one, given the same problem I would not want to trade for a new model either. Have you talked it to any other service departments? At this point everything is in the truck’s record but maybe another service department would have a different approach. IDK ???

it's mainly fine or tolerable.

Ever since i joined the forum you have had the same issue with that tranny. If it was me, i’d let it go by now. If the previous gen truck is what you’re after, sell yours and get one with a good tranny. Get a 22 truck with a bigger screen.

You saw me pull up once, heard my track bar clunks; i was unhappy with Carli, so ultimately I sold the truck with it. In retrospect, that was the right decision. I still would have been unhappy if i kept that truck.

Just an a different opinion.

I had another 10 speed trans (same one different truck) it operated as you said yours does. They tested it at multiple dealers until I was blue in the face and never found anything “wrong” with it. I got another truck and it is great so far.

Get another truck!

I have a 21 that has been in and out of the shop for transmission issues since it had 15k on it. They tried to repair it over and over until finally, they replaced the transmission. Shop foreman said it was replaced with a brand new (not remanufactured) transmission, same as would be put in a new 24 rolling off the line, with all updates they have done to it. I would encourage you to establish a good relationship with the shop foreman at your dealership if you haven't already done so. That can have a massive impact on your dealership experience. They can have a lot of control on what repair path is taken with your vehicle and may be able to salvage your relationship with your truck.

🤞I'm at 56k, have had no issues at all with my transmission, (2021) warranty will be done in less than 4k. I'm somewhat of the addage if there was a bad part or not assembled properly 🤔 issue(s) would have already shown up.

That is a tough question
I had a 18 150 with 10 speed and I took it in 4 times and they would reflash tranny and that was it. I gave up
Sold truck right before warranty expired
They say the squeaky wheel gets the grease but how many times do you have to complain
Thankfully my other trucks have been fine. Occasional hard shift but doesn’t repeat

this could be an option

Thank you everyone for words of wisdom, I plan on meeting with the shopforeman on Wednesday. I did not get a chance to meet with him today, as I had to drop it and get to work.

My service writer did tell me that haven't had to many complaints with 23-24 trucks so they have seemed to got the 10spd sorted out. 20-22, especially 20 & early 21 seem to have the most amount of problems.

I have a 22 and don't recall any hard down shifts (~32k miles). The only issue i experience on a fairly regular basis is when it's first thing in the morning and I take off down the street. The truck starts to shift gears and somewhere between 3rd and 5th gears, it completely bogs down and has no acceleration for about a second and then kicks back in. After that one time, it drives normal. Haven't taken it in to get anything looked at as I just assume it's early and needs some coffee like me 😁

There sure are a lot of reports of owners who have issues with the 10 speed from 21 through 24. Ford needs to work this out. There is no doubt that either parts or programming is the issue. If programming does not work then it needs to be taken apart and the bad parts need to be identified and replaced.

Given the 2020-2021 trucks can be programmed seems like people need to reach out to see who can tune the transmission. This would answer lots of questions about parts or tuning being the source of the problem.

I think the big issue is debris in the vb, vb solenoid issue (maybe related to the previous), then there's the CDF drum bushing shifting. The other thing i've been reading is the skip shift apparently really beats up the internal drum cage.

Mine does this occasionally, and it hit so hard one time, you would have thought the driveshaft dropped out. Dealer said everything is fine... hasn't been pulled for a full inspection/diag... pfft

Has your dealer actually pulled/disassembled the trans to inspect the internals?

No, everytime they have reset the adaptive learning or did some type of program update or recall. This will be the first time they will look at it with no recall/TSB updates available. Ford has to authorize any further investigation. I haven't heard of the valve body test before, so maybe that will show something. My service writer said that if it passes this test there will not be a lot more they can do. Ford has to authorize any further investigation. The service writer told me that the last 2 trucks that have failed the valve body test, Ford authorized a complete transmission replacement. If nothing turns up, I might have them perform a trans service/flush on it. That will at least give them the opportunity to at least open up the transmission pan and check for debris or something unusual. Maybe a flush and new fluid might help?

I personally feel that it is the valve body acting up, but who knows.

Well I got a call from the dealership today, they were able to duplicate the issue several times and determined that there is some type of internal issue going on with gears 4 & 3. The shop foreman advised me that after contacting Ford hotline with the concerns, they authorized a complete brand new transmission under warranty. Suprisingly the transmission is in stock at Ford and the dealer should have it on Monday.

After dealing with this for over 4 years I am glad that it is being taken care of.

Update. Picked up my truck last night from dealer. Only drove it a couple of miles, shifts were pefect, but definitely need more seat time. The truck was diagnosed with a faulty valve body, however Ford authorized a complete new transmission. Attached is the description of what was performed. I suggest to anyone having similiar problems that you can duplicate to take your truck in. Nice part is that this transmission has all the improvements that were put into late '22 and '23 & '24 models.

I will provide further update once I get more seat time.

Hopefully it works out well for you. My new replacement has had the hard shift from Reverse to Drive since day 1 when it was replaced in August this year. It otherwise drives ok. I'm so sick of taking it to the dealership for transmission warranty work so I'll just deal with it. I have 45k left on my extended warranty. I'll probably just move into something else when that time comes. Ford has been back and forth with this transmission repeatedly since it had 15k on it. I'm interested to see how the new Ram does in the next couple years.
